BryanOnALaptop's Journal, 17 May 2018

This might be a long journal but I thought I'd share.

I need to research this, or get some confirmation from the FatSecret family. But Im thinking whole grain calories or the preferred calorie intake when counting calories to lose weight. Yes, no or it depends?

Here is where this question stems from....

So I over heard someone talking about calorie intake and how some calories break down differently, some into fat, some into something else (cant remember.)

Whole grains and white calories (i'm assuming white bread, white rice) came up in the conversation.

I know when I was doing 1200 calories sometimes my weight would drop like crazy and sometimes not so much. I figured it had something to do with what I was eating.

I guessed oatmeal was one of the foods that would make my weight drop more (whole grain.) But i couldn't confirm it.

Eating oatmeal helps me drop weight too, and lean proteins and green salads. Bread not so much.

Lots of factors in weight loss. I follow calorie count because I eat anything and everything, but try to stick with whole foods, fibrous veggies, lowfat meats. So-called white calories (simple carbs) break down quicker into sugar than vegetable carbs (complex carbs) and provide fewer vitamins and minerals. Whole grains can go either way - they are complex carbs, but the amount of fiber varies greatly, so the effect on calorie count will change. Basically fiber is a carb but doesn't get digested and absorbed so "net carbs" are what you absorb. Fatsecret, oddly, does not subtract the net carb calories from the totals, so you don't get to see a real count if you have a high fiber diet. So 1200 calories of bread and sugar will affect digestion differently than lean proteins and green salads.

Whole grains have the advantage of containing a lot of fiber which reduces hunger. They are also not as calorie dense as other foods unless they have been processed into something else. Also, because the body can't digest all of it, the gut microbiome will eat some of it. This has great health benefits, as the right bacterial can help prevent diseases like colorectal cancer and infectious disease and maybe more since we just discovered this aspect of the human body. The additional bulk will mean constipation is reduced and issues like diverticulitis is less likely.

Have a look at this: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/6-reasons-why-a-calorie-is-not-a-calorie It is really informative about calories and what they break down into and how 5 calories from ice cream is very different than 5 calories from chicken. Its a good read.

I am crazy, good is not. Simple, easy, logical.why is it that so many times we prefer a bag of corn chips, or vanilla cake with sprinkles, while the bananas are rotting on the kitchen counter and the yogurt is almost expired on the fridge. We are a society that need to learn a lot. Change so much. Here at fatsecret we are transforming ourselves, thank god. But this facts really shock me still and I am scared to go back, to open that bag of fake cheddar potato chips with that fake onions dip and eat eat eat until is gone. Why?why?why?
