Sent a letter to Jenny Craig® this morning to provide me with a list of foods that have any of the following artificial sweeteners in them:
- Acesulfame potassium
- Aspartame
- Sucralose

I need to avoid these to prevent migraines. They say they will get back to me in 72 hours. I have only seen these sweeteners in a couple items. Crossing fingers.

Interestingly enough, I found a Time Magazine article about how artificial sweeteners are linked to weight gain, rather than weight loss. http://time.com/4859012/artificial-sweeteners-weight-loss/

I actually get my sweetener from home Depot, I buy a stevia plant for $3.00 and boil the leaves in water/ reduce it to make a sweetner..And keeps on growing ..

I also have to watch out for artificial sweeteners and was told be Dr. to avoid color dyes in food and especially drinks. Red, blue, yellow, and caramel.

Someone said calories in calories out and artificial sweeteners basically have no calories, so can they make you gain or are calories in calories out wrong? They both can't be right, can they? How can anyone know! Nan

OMG, you will be amazed at how many different names they use for these chemical things and Jenny Craig may not be able to identify them all. Good luck.

I read somewhere that artificial sweeteners will fool the brain into thinking you're ingesting sugar and will tell the pancreas to release insulin anyway. Something something science biology chemistry and yes, it will cause weight gain and insulin resistance anyway. Also, the aftertaste is truly naff so I steer clear of them. Bleah.

From the article... "It’s not yet clear whether artificial sweeteners actually cause harm, however. Observational studies that link the sweeteners to health problems do not prove the sweeteners themselves are responsible. Other factors may muddle the link; people who consume more artificially sweeteners may eat more processed food, for example, which is linked to a higher risk for obesity or heart-related problems. More research is definitely needed,” says Azad. “You need a long-term study.” I sweeten my coffee with them every morning. I drink water flavored with 0 calorie propel to skip the high cost of diet pop and the high calorie of regular pop.

0 calories in those they’re on linked to weight gain because people who consume them gain weight by eating more calories from other foods since they think “these are 0 calories so I can eat more food” just like anything fat free, less calories but people also confuse them as being “calorie free” which is an all too common thing that happens. You can eat 100 boxes of those everyday (please don’t) it won’t make you gain weight in the form of fat or muscle. Maybe water weight, not not actual weight. And in moderation they won’t cause any problems unless you’re medically prone to problems from artificial food sources. I’ve had 0 calorie foods, sweeteners, fat free, sugar free etc for years no problems no migraines ever. Some people who experience those or “tingling” sensations have a neural problem in the brein which triggers those issues. Hence medically prone. For everyone else with no pre-existing problems associated with them they’re safe and harmless. Unless you’re drinking 12 cans every 5 hours or something. The majority of studies are ones linked to mice and the dosage compared to them vs humans are WAY larger than any human can consume to cause any significant damage.

I use the liquid stevia and the liquid flavored stevia also in my water. Can or would someone explain the term to me "calories in, calories out". we burn calories reguardless, even when we sleep. So this makes me wonder. Thanks in advance.

Oh also, some labeled “0 calorie” foods/drinks do contain 1-4g carbs on average which, granted is nothing but still contain calories so just check nutrition labels 👍🏻

@getoffme I wrote a long post in my profile explaining all related that in my profile should answer your Questions

Here's my take: the whole business of calories in food is a somewhat artificial construct. And while there might be sound scientific theory behind it, when it comes to the human body things are often less than scientific. So, in this instance, if the artificial sweetener is so good at fooling the body into thinking it's actually sugar, the body might still shoot out insulin to deal with the "sugar" it's now sensing. The other thing is that sweeteners are BIG BUSINESS. And I'm not 100% convinced that we're getting the truth about their contents, because if we did, we might choose alternatives.

I generally stick to natural cane sugar if I have to have something sweetened. My main concern is when it comes to me already sweetened. I have to look. I know what I’m sensitive too. I know what makes my brain sick. Work arounds are possible, but I need to know before it goes on my order.

Some of these have been helpful for me to loose weight. To each their own.

@me,myselfandi: Good point. I use Sweet 'n Low daily. I've lost 43 pounds since November. What I DID stop drinking is diet sodas because I believe they contribute to weight gain, not weight loss. I do, however, put Sweet 'n Low in my coffee. And my protein shakes have sucralose in them.
