Observations, FWIW.
#1:The potato experiment yielded interesting results. 3/4 of a medium red potato (as hash browns) put my total daily carbs for that day at just over 30 grams. Still considered very low carb intake, and didn't bump me out of ketosis. It also quelled cravings that had started to surface, and didn't induce any new ones. And as others have reported, wasn't as delicious as I remembered/anticipated.
It did, however, cause a bump up in my weight of 2.5 lbs over the next 2 days. All other variables in my diet/IF remained the same, so I can only surmise that not only do the number of carbs count, but the *source* of carbs does, as well. I know a lot of the added weight was water retention, because my feet and ankles have been swollen since then. I'll have to play with bumping up carbs with leafy greens to see if I get the same effect.

#2: Hunger has not really been an issue for a couple of months now, and I have mostly been maintaining a 23:1 IF. So, after revisiting some Dr.Fung videos on the benefits of longer fasts, night before last I decided that starting yesterday morning, I would do at least a 48 hour fast. My stomach started rumbling about an hour after I woke up, and continued all day. I drank 3 times as much water as usual, but it persisted. Finally, after 28 hours, I had a headache, and the hunger was persistent, so I decided to break it. The observation/question here is, was it the fact that I had pre-determined that I would intentionally fast the subconscious trigger for the hunger signals? How much of our body chemistry is actually conditioned response? Today, I'm going to play with some EFT to see if I can elicit a different paradigm.
#3: After all the water yesterday, and not paying enough attention to electrolytes, I woke up with a rock hard muscle cramp in my calf this morning. Ooops!

#4: If there is any doubt in anyone's mind about the CICO belief, I'm living proof that it's not that simple. I've maintained a deep calorie deficit for several months, and the weight is falling, but at a snail's pace, in spite of increased activity.

I'm having fun with this living laboratory, and will continue. Comments welcome!
Have a great Thursday, FS friends!

@Lady, I missed your comment earlier. Sorry to hear you're having difficulties. I'm sure you'll find your balance again. We learn from our 'slips' more than from toeing the line, most times. We're here to learn from each other, and to help each other over the blips and blunders, as I see it. One thing I've learned it to be brutally honest with myself, and to let down the shields to allow others to see what I see. I think they call that being "authentic". I'm so appreciative that this community is willing to share so much!

@Mskestrela Glad to hear this! You're in the know! You can also use Magnesium Flakes, mixed w water, to make Mag "Oil" yes, it feels oily, and can roll onto skin 2b readily absorbed too. You can use a deodorant bottle, found cheaply online to put it in. 4 oz is best. I'd have to look up the water to flake ratio again. I can do that, if you want me to. Amazon, has both, the malate by SN is the one on Amazon @ 21 dollars, also the roll on bottles (1 time use despite my "play' to reuse them, alas, I cannot). I haven't seen it at vitamin stores, the SN brand. Almost all things are absorbed by skin. Some things in storebought, such as soap which is really pure petrochemicals as byproduct from OIL for cars, is not good. Soap, the word, is not found on the labels as it's unlawful to put the word SOAP on labels of what is not soap. Real soap, is amazing.

You forgot one of the most important components, Ollie: what you THINK. That may be the single most important factor. Thoughts become things.

I worked in the advertising industry many years ago, and that is precisely why I quit. I was flat out told that my job was to "create a NEED" that our clients were able to fill. Be it booze or vitamins. Lying for profit just didn't suit me.

@Ollie, you have beat that horse on so many other people's journals, it's gotten boring. You come from a standpoint that's incomprehensible to a lot of us, and while you may be correct, it doesn't really matter. Frankly, most, if not all of us, just want to find something that works, and we can live with. You can defend your position all you want, but I will continue to delete your comments that highjack my journal.

I am going to have to agree with Ollie on the "supplements are dangerous" thing. Different foods grow in different season's for a reason. Natural remedies work. I more and more convinced of this more and more each day. I am learning so much through Ayurveda! :)

@TMiller, I watched your video. If this is true, how then, do you explain someone who averages a daily deficit of 1500 Kcal not dropping huge amounts of fat? Watch this video for another perspective: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIuj-oMN-Fk

@mskestrela that can be explained by two things. First, they are likely not creating a 1500 calorie deficit, as that is an enormous deficit and their method of tracking is off, and second, if they are creating a deficit that large, the metabolism slows in order to compensate for it, thereby minimizing the deficit. We measure the metabolism with all of our weight loss patients, and it's common to see yo-yo dieters with metabolic rates 20-25% lower than predicted.

Yes Ollie that's me in the video. I'm not trying to recruit anyone; just educate. There's a lot of misinformation in the weight loss world, especially when it comes to the demonization of carbohydrates and the popularity of keto.

@TMiller, did you watch the video I linked?
