mskestrela's Journal, 17 July 2016

Ok, this may piss some people off, but I hope it will be something others can identify with.
I just don't get very hungry any more! And when I do, all it takes to satisfy the hunger is a few bites of something. I feel like I've stuffed myself today, and I ended up with a grand total of 808 calories for the day.
I'm supposed to be getting a bare minimum of 50 g of protein per day, and sitting here, stuffed to the gills, I have just over 24 g in me. Since I'm not doing a full-on, long-time fast, that's what my macros say is 'necessary' for health.
Now, I have never been a binge eater, or an emotional eater. I've never had a sweet tooth, I've never been a snacker. AND, I've pretty much always been doing IF of at least 16:8, since breakfast has been a no-go for me since childhood. Yeah, used to drive Mom nuts. So I don't have a lot of "stuff" to overcome. But, it also means that the changes I've made since going LCHF/IF aren't all that dramatic, so my losses are going to be slower.
So, my question is this: according to Dr. Fung, you can pretty much eat anything, as long as you at least IF 16:8. How is it that I ended up, at my heaviest of 235 following that regimen? And if IF is the answer to metabolic syndrome, how did I still end up with it?
There's a missing piece to this puzzle, and I'm going to find it!!!!

I've had the same not hungry thing every time I've gone on a long term diet and I now know that you shouldn't eat past when you're satisfied. I have no idea about the protein thing, but I know sometimes it's hard for me to get the 50, too. Did you eat a lot of carbs when you were heavier? I lived on carbs but then again I rarely did the IF before this. I know you'll figure this out.

My guess is in the sugar and starch content of the foods you used to eat. it would create enough excess that sugar would be stored as fat and to much glycogen would preventng ketosis. Before you could use it all out was time rio east again.

Were you eating heavy carb fat combos, like pizza, milkshakes, etc. I know that I got fat eating 'healthy whole grains' and lots of fruit. I was very health food conscious; I just didn't know that heavy carbs would kill me!

Woooohoooo!!! Another pioneer to dig for the WHOLE truth! I surely hope you share your thoughts on the way! Have you tried looking into food intolerance which causes lots of inflammation/water retention? I say there no freakin way that I lost 23lbs of fat in the first month, 66 in 6 months. I would wake up at night like every 1-1 1/2 hours to pee. SOMETHING caused all of that water! It was probably mostly junk food for me, but whole food intolerance is real also.

Did you eat lots of meat? I find that lots of meat, esp red meat kills my digestion. Just throwing some stuff out there to try to help you out, sweet pea! :)

OoooOoooo, and guess what!? I haven't had a piece of meat in 3 days o-O, plenty of carbs with fiber, & coupled with IF and haven't had any freakin cravings! GO FIGURE! *knocks on wood*

I'm not sure what the magic formula is but I'm hungry all the time.

@Buzz...in my own personal experience, it is easier if you teach the body how to burn fat for fuel again.

I was having severe pains in my knees after working out so I started looking around for something to help. In my search I ran across Great Lakes Gelatin Collagen Hydrolysate Joint Care. It dissolves in hot or cold beverages and has 11g of protein per serving. When I am not feeling well or hungry at meal times, I just make a broth of some sort or another and add it. Sometimes I use it just to bring up my protein consumption for the day. Hope that helps.

More protein, more healthy fats and carbs from above-ground non starchy vegetables. Smaller and smaller portions over time will train your stomach to get fuller faster. The protein will satisfy you and the healthy fats will keep you burning fat...essentially.

The key is to not eat a lot at once, measure your food to serving size and not go back for seconds.

I freakin love this community!!!!!!! Yeah, I was a carboholic. Not so much sugar, because my dad's family has a HUGE history of diabetes, so I have been mindful of sugar since my 30's. But bread and pasta? It was the majority of my diet for many years. Wheat. Wheat with fats. That's the demon duo for me. I know now that I'm wheat intolerant. Not just gluten, but the bastardized "wheat" that's being produced in the US now. I've always, instinctively known that fats are good for me. I've been a voracious omnivore for years. But my go-to meal when stressed or tired (cortisol!) has been pasta with butter and Parmesan. @Erika, I craved carbs.....no sugar, but pizza, bread, pasta, crackers, spuds, corn......the list goes on. Complex carbs are as much poison to me as raw cane sugar. @C2B, I used to eat a lot of meat, but lately, nothing appeals. Least of all a hunk of meat. :/ I truly believe I could become a "breatharian" right now! I'm finding a craving for things like beans and other complex slow carbs are coming up. I'm thinking it's time to trust my body once again, and go with the flow.

I do low-carb/high-fat and low calories. I averaged 900 calories/day for about six months, and lost over 100lbs. That was after the first six months of just low-carb where I lost my first 100lbs. Like you, I was never hungry, just rolling right down the tracks. I'm in maintenance now and have had a few days over the last three months where I've had some things I wouldn't have touched three months ago, and I've noticed hunger and cravings aren't in the graveyard where I thought they were. It's a precarious thing.

@BDMgoggins, yeah....the starches were my Achilles heel. But that again raises the quandary of Dr. Fung's assertion that IF will reduce insulin, and therefore insulin resistance, etc. If I was truly doing IF for years and years, regardless of what I ate, where TF did the metabolic syndrome come from?

@April, yes, my appetite typically goes down in the summer/hot weather. This is new, and different. I will keep you posted! @Annabelee, thankfully, my keto lifestyle has eliminated 99% of my pain. I have been seeing a lot of information about collagen, recently, and have it in my back pocket, so to speak. @PhillySue, yeah......bread and pasta were my drugs of choice. Getting "clean" of them was a royal bee-yotch!!!!

Thanks for 'weighing in' Phil! I'm still wrapping my head around the burning fat vs. "You NEED to hit your protein macro" concept. As always, I'm going to go with my body talk vs. internet scary talk. LOL

IF will reduce insulin but if your body was sensitive to wheat etc. (I think you say it causes joint pain for you? ) it could have been affecting you for years inflaming your gut and changing normal response to food.

Dr. Fund does say that IF will reduce insulin, but if I remember he also said that no matter what a high carb load would turn to sugar and turn to fat. I might not have that exactly right, but I do know that he's got some "don't eat this" foods and that bread and pasta are on the list. It's the refined grains (even whole wheat) because of the way they're processed. Basically, they have no nutritional value. In the book it's in the chapter about what to eat.
