Endurance vs. speed?
Today I ran a mile in 7:55 to prove a point to someone who claimed that I am in fact not as fit as I claim to be because I'm a slow runner and couldn't manage to run an eight minute mile.
However, it was the least enjoyable run I've had, and I'm not likely to repeat it any time soon. I'd rather run a nine and a half minute mile, but manage to go for an hour.

I think it's a fantastic piece of information to give yourself! And it takes a different kind of muscle and aerobic threshold to run the shorter, faster distances. Today I ran 6 800-meter intervals, with jog breaks, to make myself stronger because I'm training for a marathon. Will I ever run that fast during my marathon? No. But the speed work builds muscle, and adds fast-twitch fibers. So I vote for keep running with joy, at the pace that brings you joy, and every once in a while throw in a short burst of speed to remind yourself how awesome you are! But not a mile at a pace that makes you feel terrible.
There is nothing wrong with being a "slow" runner. There is something wrong with tearing down a friend for being a "slow" runner, though. Run with joy!

It all boils down to our muscle fibers! Most either have power OR endurance. Some people are blessed to have both! I am all power LOL! I can lift weights til the sun goes down but dread even 30 minutes of cardio ;)
