Debbie Cousins's Journal, 12 March 2021

I don't get it. According to the FS algorithm, I should have over 2,000 calories of DEFICIT every day, which would be more than 1/2 pound lost daily. My bowels are regular. I'm drinking the water. I should be LOSING, not gaining! Something's gotta give. I used to KNOW my body, and be able to predict how to accomplish the results I want. It was simple. I knew what to do, and all I had to do was DO it, and I would lose weight. Now, I don't know my body at all! I'm now almost SIX POUNDS behind where I need to be to accomplish my 60-pound goal by 6/27. I'm very frustrated. I'm bewildered. I'm perplexed. And I'm ANGRY. I'm seriously considering starting a total fast (water only) on Monday. I will need to go at least ten days in order to make an impact - probably longer than that to catch up the six pounds that I'm behind (or MORE by Monday, at the rate I'm going!) Right now, I'm praying about the direction I should take, and asking for the determination and perseverance to do whatever I need to do to turn things around and get them moving in the right direction, at the right speed to accomplish my goal.
240.2 lb Lost so far: 18.8 lb.    Still to go: 90.2 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Hey Debbie, I'm going through the same thing, so frustrating ☹. This morning it hit me that I've been working on this weight loss in my own strength again. I started out by giving it to God but somewhere along the way I took the assignment back from God and placed it on my shoulders🤦🏽‍♀️. I am taking this back to God, asking Him to do this work in me, for his glory! Today I celebrate you and me Debbie for choosing to have a healthier and fit life, for setting a goal and working on it. We are closer to our goals than we were before we began this journey. The scale is not our examiner and judge, we didn't gain the weight in a day and so it's ok for us to just take this journey one day at a time. Let's celebrate each day's victory, no matter how big or small. Have a blessed day, we're gonna make it in Jesus' wonderful name.

well try not to get so angry at your body that you start beating yourself! maybe you are experiencing a decrease in your metabolism rate? one way to get it up is with some exercise every day. it gets the metabolism up and it tends to stay up for a while.

I've found the calorie estimates for exercise and calories burned are pretty generous on this app. I usually go by what the fit bit app says for me and it seems pretty spot on. Fit bit usually puts me at 1800-2000 burned a day where FS thinks I burn 1800 while being sedentary. Not sure what your current calorie intake is but if you're stuck it would be better long term to drop your intake a few hundred calories, increase your activity a little. Maybe fast a day but doing it for 6 days to try and reach an arbitrary goal that doesn't have anything to do with your health isn't good. You're doing this for you not for the calendar. Good Luck! You've made a lot of progress already and this is just a little bump in the road.

It can definitely be frustrating. I’ve found that I lose weight when I keep my calories at about 1300. Also, I am trying to walk every day for at least 20-30 minutes. I looked at your food diary from yesterday and you listed oatmeal for breakfast but no sugar, nuts, milk, etc. I’ve found it’s really important to list absolutely everything, because it’s amazing how many calories just little bits of things can add up. The other thing I stopped eating was all the sugar free/fat free desert items. They just keep the cravings going. For less calories you could eat a giant bowl of strawberries with some Redi whip. Yummy! Keep going, don’t give up! You can do it!

how is it coming up with that much of a deficit? maybe recalculate because 2000 calories is a lot.

Debbie, it took me 8 months to lose 30 lbs. That was eating between 1200 to 1500 calories. The good news is I have kept it off for a year. You can't rush things.

Rule of thumb from nutritionist is your weight × 12 and subtract 500 cal. Should help with weight loss.

I would only weigh in 1x per month and focus on disciplined eating and exercise. Too much variability when you weigh in daily

It’s all about remaining consistent. Hang in there. It takes time. Fasting just leads to muscle loss if done too often. I understand your frustration though. Been there.

I wouldn’t focus on the scale as much... get yourself a tape measure and take measurements of your stomach, waist, arms, thighs, etc and watch that instead! You could be losing weight but gaining muscle and toning, that would keep you at the same weight if you’re swapping fat for muscle. Don’t get so caught up in the numbers

I think that is what is happening to me. Weight loss has stalled but I have been diligent in daily exercise, weight training and cardio; and I have kept to strict diet. Weigh in about once a week but loss has stalled. I haven't gained so I think that it must be that I have replaced fat with muscle. Clothes are definitely fitting differently and loss is visible but just not on the scales.

Debbie, I know part of your frustration is because of this challenge you are participating in, but your health is more important than the challenge. I suggest you take a step back, focus on eating your proper diet and taking care of yourself. What's important is that you are making good progress even if you don't meet the challenge. Being angry and frustrated is not conducive to good health my friend. Don't forget to love yourself. 💛

PLEASE be safe and consult a credentialed professional (not all states require nutritionists to have certifications) if you are having trouble. i cannot tell you what to do, and no one should. that said, i would SUGGEST a lifestyle change as opposed to dieting. any of the popular diets nowadays are not sustainable, mostly because people tend to suffer through them instead of just living a healthy life. if you absolutely don't want to give up cake, then eat some cake! just don't go crazy. being healthy most of the time is what will count. it is not a slipup if you are allowed to eat it :) also, check your calorie calculations. no one's needs are the exact same. we also need less calories as we age. as for the scale...weight fluctuates by 5-6lbs daily for most adults. one 8oz glass of water is even half a pound!. the "recommended" amount is over 4lbs! this isn't even including food yet! weighing in the morning after the restroom will likely be the lowest weight of the day. a more accurate picture of weight loss can be achieved by taking median or weekly average of your daily weigh-ins.

For me the FS calculated me at 1800, I adjusted it to 1450. I felt like 1800 was way too many calories for me. I am only 5'1 and I gain fat being short, so there's no way I am eating 1800 calories as long as I am aware of my intake.

Please listen to others like “shirfleur”, as it is 100% correct to focus on your health and love yourself. Use weight loss challenges as fun motivation / competition.

Perhaps the stress of worrying about the need to lose on a schedule is causing you to hold the weight. Stress hormones kick in and cause inflammation. Just a suggestion.

I love what ettenauj said! I agree with her and I’m in the same frustrating boat as Debbie. I’ve kept my calories below or at goal level since 1/1/21 and increased my exercise by at least 50%. I lost 1 lb in Jan, then gained 3 lbs in feb, ( I’ve taken my measurements-no change and my clothes fit the same) I’m frustrated, angry and fighting to not get discouraged. I’ve been to the dr last week, my thyroid labs are normal, I’m 61 and active, but can’t lose. After a very down week, I realized I need to return my focus to health and not the scale, and most importantly to God. Debbie, you have touched my heart, I want you to know I’ve have followed you for a long time, and I’ve rejoiced at your successes and have been praying that God lifts you up when you frustrated. I think there are a lot of people on this site that are rooting for you. Please don’t give up.
