Kenna Morton's Journal, 25 July 2019

A friend from the gym has two volunteer tomato plants in her yard that produce year after year— prolifically. She brought in about 30 today. They were all this big. The lemon is just so you can see how big they are. They are just incredibly flavorful. She says Monday she will have another 30 or 40 and that will be it. They will just stop. She never feeds them, waters them or anything. They have grown now for about 5 years. BLTs for dinner tonight.

Drool. I love home grown tomatoes! You can keep the B&L, I'll just take the bread, mayo & maybe a slice of onion and I'd be a happy gal!

@Tatauu...Home grown tomatoes taste so good. I can't eat store bought tomatoes like I'd eat a plum. Only if it is straight off the vine. @Keyten...gardening is pretty easy! Especially tomatoes. You can do it even from the balcony/patio. My dad lives in the city, no backyard. He has a little ole urban garden in the driveway. Gets a good harvest most years.

I lost rosemary, mint, dill, abd parsley this year cause of back to back heavy rains...tomatoes are perfectly fine

Tomatoes is on my not allowed list, but I do like them. These look flavourful. I find it fascinating that the people who may have the richest experience with tomatoes, the Italians, discard both seeds and skin, and only use the meat part, and cook that part for hours.

Go for it....oregano, thyme, chives, and basil have been the most cooperative for me. You may need to check your growing zone...you are probably zone 10

I planted 4 tomato plants in containers by my back door. So far, I've got one little 'ole tomato growing on one of the vines. And, it doesn't look like it will ever turn red. I'm not sure if it's the soil, too much water with the water running off the roof when it rains, too hot right up by the house, not enough air circulation, or just my not very green thumb. I even built a cage to put around them so the goats and the peacocks would eat the plants before they could produce. Shouldn't have worried though, since they are not producing...I'm jealous of those ones you have there in the bowl. They look delicious.

@To145...how much full sun do they get a day?

What are average temps in your area right now?

AboutMyTribe— this is Southern California so we pretty much have sun everyday, and this time of year it is 80-90.

Keyten77– I really am lucky. Many of the people I know from the gym have been in their homes forever and don’t have kids or grandkids around. They all have huge yards and grow peaches, nectarines, kumquats, lemons, grapefruit, oranges, lots of Myer lemons, avocados, grapes, squash of all kinds, cucumbers etc. . Many don’t do a lot of baking anymore so to repay their kindness of sharing their bounty with me, I bake for them. Cookies, zucchini and banana breads,, jams of various kinds. And I help them with their medical issues and occasionally go to the doctor with them to act as their advocate. A great bunch of people who really help each other.

Thanks Kenna. Yea, I am in zone 7. We have had a lot of rain followed by heavy heat. My bell peppers haven't come in and the one that started to had blossom end rot. A few of my tomatoes as well. My dad has had a great year thus far, but he gets a lot of full sun in his location. My balcony doesn't get as much full sun as his.

Cut up some homegrown tomatoes, stir in garlic, fresh basil, salt, black pepper and EVOO and allow to sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes. Meanwhile cook a pot of pasta, drain and pour the hot pasta over the tomato mixture. Heaven in a bowl.
