Diana 1234's Journal, 03 November 2022

Well it happened....I woke up yesterday with a " tweak" in my lower back. I went to body pump and couldn't lift my normal weight. I ended up doing most of class using bodyweight. It was awful. Came home and did heat and ice all day and used my massage gun. It is slightly better this morning but no workout today. I don't really even know how I did it but I have been hitting gym 6 days a week and lifting pretty heavy.Ugh..I will say it again...getting old sucks!😡

Sorry to hear about your back. Ice really helps. I always want to use the heating pad but the doctor ad physical therapist say no to that.

I have learned six days a week needs more variety...not heavy weight every day but some days doing rower or elliptical.

if pain is confirmation of life, we're living more and more each and every day as we get older! going through similar here. it's annoying to say the least.

Diana. I have been an athlete my whole life. It has nothing to do with working out 6 days a week or lifting heavy or with age. This can even happen to me and a lot of people just sitting at a desk. Only thing it can take a little longer to recover at our age. I always had a great sports therapist/ Chiropractor. He would only work on me when I got injured. You are doing the right thing. Heat and ice and rest. I also use ibuprofen. Also stretching once the inflammation is down. Hope it heals quickly.

Speedy recovery!

Thank you everyone! Fritzy, that's interesting info. My chiro always tells me heat and ice. Have to check that out. Golf, I did take some ibuprofen yesterday. Still doing heat n ice today as it's still very tight but pain isn't as bad. Katsolo, right you are!! HCB, I do cardio ( elliptical, bike, treadmill, stair master) at least 3-4 days a week before I start my weightlifting..Hate it but need to do it for heart health. Maybe I should do it instead of lifting a couple times a week .?.. Morticia and Livinbreezy, 💜💜💜

Sorry to hear that Diana! it sucks to hurt your back. I did that last summer I was playing with my grandson in the water and twisting a lot with my back. Well I knew it was sore but what threw it out was when I went to pick up the sprinkler later that day and I jumped backwards when it hit water in my face. I could not stand straight for 2 days. I had a workout that day- told the trainer and he said come in - I will train around you. He did and by the time I saw him again I was back to normal. Now I only train three times a week M-W-F. My trainer doesn't believe in cardio and I am just fine with that for me!! LOL

The heat only helps at the beginning to get blood into the muscle, then ice reduces the inflammation after that. So only ice from now on and then basically only enough to dull the pain. Ibuprofen will do similarly to ice, reducing inflammation. Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation

Current thinking is lifting often and medium weight not heavy will help grow muscle. Lifting heavy will increase strength not necessarily increase muscle for women anyway

Diana - I might be a little confused about ice and heat. I went to PT for calf, thigh, hip and lower back pain. The physical therapist said to use ice, that heat causes inflammation. I seem to remember ice was good for everything but I could also use heat for something - i thought it was my legs. Right now I use heat just to be able to sleep!

Abbadabba. I beg to differ because I have done heavy weight lifting. Your statement about women not heavy weight lifting and muscle growth is incorrect. Actually just the opposite they should lift more heavy than what they think they can for bone protection. Good luck

Diana - I forgot - I also have prescription strength Ibuprofen which is anti inflammatory. I take it once in awhile.

Fritzy, no worries. I too have some prescription ibuprofen. ( 800mg) I took one today but I'm still really tight in my back. I'm sure it will go away but we are leaving on a months RV vacation and I need to be able to pack tomorrow. Stay warm tonight!!💜💜 Golf and Abbadabba, I lift heavy for definition and muscle growth. For me heavy weights seem to be helping. If I do less weight, more reps I seem to get tight but not necessarily more muscular. It's what works for me 💪👍

Maybe it’s not getting “old” that sucks, maybe it’s overdoing it.

Oh no! So sorry! Ugh!! Prayers for healing.

Jesús! I hope you get well soon. Try to rest up and go to the doctor!

Kenna, whenever I read your posts I hear my mother's voice. I say that with true admiration.💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Overtraining is real, you probably didn’t recover enough. Do you have a foam roller? I roll my back out after every deadlift day

Nosequepongo, Thanks, it's not bad enough to call Dr. I just need to rest. It's better tonight than yesterday for sure!💜. StormsGirl, thanks, feeling a bit better tonight. I've been resting all day. 💜💜
