** CALORIES PART 2 **

To begin, I am a retired keto dieter. I've seen both sides of the battlefield. I'd lost a significant amount of weight by "lowering my insulin on low-carb and keto diets" for a number of years.

I switched to a high-carb diet. I lost weight and a lot of body fat in July of last year on high-carbs too.

While on keto at around 20g of carbohydrates per day, I managed to gain a significant amount of weight over time.

On the same note, I added a significant amount of fat while eating high-carbs as well within a couple weeks.

What do these have in common? How can these diametrically opposed WoEs each create the same results in either direction? How did I do it?

You guessed it: CALORIES!

Eating keto, by its nature, causes you to fill up fast because fats are very satisfying to your metabolism. You feel less hungry less often. I'd puke before I could eat one more bite of steak and cauliflower drenched in butter with a side of bacon... just too rich. I was averaging around 1700 calories consumed per day. I lost weight.

Enter the discovery of protein shakes... now I could drink my protein while i worked out! Yaay! This also added a couple hundred more calories, but was zero-carb, so all was good for keto. Gradually, my metabolism adapted and I was eating close to 2700 calories. I suddenly stopped working out when I got a desk job, but never stopped eating big. Still in ketosis, I was consuming 2500 calories while sedentary. I got fat.

Up and down over the years - still always obsessed with keeping the carbs under 75g while not caring about calories.

Then I made a few friends on here (shoutouts to my eye-opening homies!)...

When I got serious about gaining muscle mass last year, I cut my calories to about 1200-1600 while holding an active job AND INCREASED MY CARB INTAKE SIGNIFICANTLY. I lost 15lbs in a few weeks!

I kept increasing my caloric intake while my carbs stayed stable. I was fine until I hit 4000 calories per day. I was at that level all of two weeks and my body did a giant 360° and I got fat - FAST.

So you see, it's calories not carbs that was the variable that changed me on either program. Either can lose weight. Either can gain. Some have carb sensitivities and can't touch them, unfortunately. That isn't the case for me.

If you love carbs, don't do keto. If you're not fully engaged with your way of eating, it either won't last or it'll be torture. Pick something you enjoy and don't be afraid to change when you get bored. Just practice portion control and you'll do fine!

Find ANY diet that works for you to achieve your desired results and stick with it while keeping your calories low enough and you will succeed!

No one is better than another; the perfect diet is the pine that's perfect FOR YOU! 👌

Nice write up on your experience up to this point. I've personally tried almost all diets in my 19 years of dieting/lifting. I've had the most success on a flexible plan.

Nice post! I’ve been thinking about CICO a lot lately. It seems to me that most diets are or should be based on CICO. I’m miserable with under 100g carbs per day so low carb isn’t for me. Fat doesn’t make me full like others. A mix of protein and carbs is what keeps me full but I have less calories to work with I think. The whole food type diet using CICO would be the ideal for most health wise I think-if we could stick to it. Less packaged and processed foods so healthier on preservatives and sugars. However in my case I dislike 90% of veggies so I’d live on the 5-6 veggies I like and meat. It would be very nice to have a test to quiz of some sort( one that allows us to pick food choices for picky eaters or those who have sensitivities/allergies) that we could take that would allow us to decide which diets would work best for us before trying them. Perhaps you could design a test like that for us ;). You seem to have the knowledge to do so! (Sry it’s a long post just to get to that point lol).

It is all about total daily calories. I need to count/watch my total carbs and I was, and was also treadmilling 12 miles a week, doing nautilus and drinking at least 6 glasses a day-only to maintain my present weight within a range of 3 pds plus or minus. Last week, while doing the above, I also started counting calories and staying between 1100 and 1250 per day. I have already lost 4 pounds. I am in my mid 60s and realizing that I cannot and should not be eating as much as I used to-its like the older you get, the less calories you need to eat, and if you don't make the adjustment, the harder it is to loose weight. Chris you learned a valuable lesson and thanks so much for sharing it!! :}

Thanks for posting and sharing what you know. Knowledge is power.

Thanks, Chris. You are so right. Finding what works for the individual is key. If you can't sustain it, the loss will only be temporary. Feeling deprived only leads to old ways. Been there, done that.

You need flexibility in a weight loss plan, so that you do not drive your self crazy , by wants and needs, going outside the box once in awhile is called carb rebuilding, sometimes you just need it, and jump back onto the band wagon !!

I agree wholeheartedly that personalizing your WOE is crucial. Adopting this and then that "fad" diet without examining yourself and your needs, and educating yourself on what particular foods do -- and do *to you*! -- is just no good. ("Grapefruit diet" ring a bell?! I tried so many of those things!) I did not learn portion control as a child.

Assigned a trip to the corner store for milk and bread, I'd spend a nickel from my mother's change on candy. When I was 12, I stole money from my grandmother's purse because I'd spent my "school supply" money from my parents in candy! (OOOH, trouble!) As soon as I began earning money babysitting, I started spending it on candy -- LOTS of candy! As I launched my career and earned more, I ate better stuff and more of it. (No more Hershey Bars for this girl when I could shop at Fanny Farmer!) I was a slave to it. Chocolate and sugar controlled *me*.

Peep, it's DEADPOOL1234 or maybe 12345.

Peeps, he just doesn't post anymore. I sure hope he didn't pass away!

Was deadpool ever overweight? If I remember right he was around 140lb soaking wet and he used emojis every 5 words...in a 10 paragraph reply :)

He helped me so much. I honestly don't think I would have stuck with it, if it wasn't for him reaching out. Sure wish he would come back.

Deadpool12345 still logs his food, usually days ahead of time. Ought to be an inspiration!

Good post Chris. I've never been big fan of carb foods anyways -- aside from beer, of course. I've been close to living the Keto life for years by accident because I only really like meat, cheese, and some select veggies. Bread? Useless! I've been making sandwiches by placing cheese between two pieces of meat far longer than it was cool. Used to get called a weirdo for that. Then KFC started it and it was genius -- go figure. deserts, booze, and way too many calories in with next to no exercise to burn them was my downfall -- always has been. I'm losing now on a low carb diet, but I'm also consuming half the calories I used to and have cut out all sweets and booze. I read a newsletter by a guy who swears by his high carb low fat diet, but I couldn't do it. I'd starve to death out of boredom alone. Also, he eats a lot of meat-free meals. For some reason, if I eat a meal that doesn't include meat, I end up still hungry for meat. I might end up feeling like eating more will make me vomit, but I'll still be hungry for meat. Odd sensation feeling hungry and stuffed at the same time lol
