Fritzy, why don't you look at the Mediterranean diet where it's overall low fat, but they include healthy fats? NF greek yogurt is a great replacement for sour cream, BTW.

First off, if it works for you, do it. We have a tendency to demonize one food or another, which ultimately IMHO is silly. It used to be fat that was the big boogeyman, now it's carbs. Christopher Gardner, a Stanford nutrition researcher, ran the DIETFITS study comparing low fat to low carb. The results were virtually identical -- most people lost, a few gained, and the difference between most lost and most gained was the same. The trick of any diet is to find something that helps you limit calories that doesn't make you miserable and that you can maintain. You have my support. 😊 As for potatoes, have you tried nonfat plain yogurt on them? Another option, even if you're not WFPB is to look into some WFPB sauce and dressing recipes. While some rely on nut butters or avocado, not all do, and I've found more than a few that are low or nonfat, since oil isn't on that diet. Today, I'm going to try making an orange and date sauce that's supposed to be lovely on greens. Good luck! 👍

every type of diet works as long as you are in a calorie deficit. do what diet works for you that you can stick to. I would much rather get more carbs in than extra fats

I think part of the issue with low fat is that people don’t feel satiety on it and end up over eating. Part of the reason the recommendations now are healthy fats like nut butter, olive oil, eggs, and avocados. But less meat based fats.

Thanks Katsolo - I've looked at the Mediterranean diet before and like it and when I am eating the way I want I can eat that way. I just don't like seafood all that much. I think there are many diets that actually are low fat, they just all have different names now. I've never had nonfat plain yogurt so don't know if I'll like it. When I have yogurt it's usually flavored. I just want to do this for a short time and then add back in the good fats - avocados, nuts and olive oil. Thanks wringwyo - I had to look up WFPL! That is my doctor's goal for the way for me to eat. I have a hard time because I just need some processed foods but can limit them. I also remember hearing about research saying both low carb and low fat diets had similar results. I have never been able to do low carb diets but am trying to get most of my carbs from fruits and vegetables. Although I love toast for breakfast I am no longer having 2 slices of toast, but just one slice or half an English muffin or bagel. Thanks otb - my calories should stay low. I just want to try it the way I did it many years ago for a couple of weeks to see what the results are.

Thanks Daisy! I think people prefer high protein, high fat diets. I've read comments from people saying they love being able to eat all the bacon they want. I know not everyone who does low carb or KETO thinks that way. Things have changed since I first tried a low fat diet. I am less likely to buy non fat salad dressings and other processed foods that are non fat. I think a baked potato is very filling! I just prefer it with butter and cheese.

I was on low fat diets in the past and got worse. As an R.N. I see very little use for them.

just eat a balanced diet. of all the fad diets, going low fat probably is the worst. you need something like 30% of your daily calories to be from fat to maintain proper hormone levels.

Thanks Morticia and Allpain - I don't consider low fat to be a fad. I need to have a low fat diet because of having my gallbladder removed. 20-30% of total calories from fat is my goal and I only plan on doing this for about 3 weeks before adding back in olive oil, nuts and avocado.

Thanks alfredo - I can't tell if you are encouraging me to try low fat or discouraging it but I appreciate you taking the time to read my journal and make a comment. I normally don't eat much meat, maybe 2 or 3 times a week. I try to eat chicken or canned tuna when I eat meat but lately have been eating ground beef more than normal because I am making tacos. That will end once the ground beef in the freezer is gone.

I am doing low fat diet right now, because my cholesterol is too high, but what I am doing is watching type of fat. Basically keeping saturated fat lower. it works for people who have had gall bladder removed too. My husband is watching the same fat since he had gallbladder removed a few years ago.

I thought you were on a low fat diet?

My diet is high carb, low fat, but that's because I eat only fresh fruit for breakfast and lunch, and then salads with a protein for dinner. The protein is cooked in canola oil or olive oil (12 grams of fat per Tablespoon, but only 2 grams of saturated fat). Dressings for salads are made with olive oil and vinegars, herbs and seasonings. Most of the fat in people's diets comes from full-fat milk and cheese, meats, and dressings like mayo. All-you-can-eat bacon & sausage is just begging for kidney stones (sodium) and a higher than recommended LDL count (saturated fats). If you want to lower your fat intake, maybe limit cheese to once a week, and try the Greek yogurt as sour cream trick others have mentioned. BBQ sauce is good, as is Sriracha or honey mustard on the baked potato. Potatoes are great -- protein, low fat, filling -- unless you're diabetic. If not, don't sweat it. Vegetarians eat tons of spuds. Be more worried about the sugars in breads, which are such an addicting food.

JB beat me to the punch on defending potatoes. 😉 Dr. Gregor on NutritionFacts.org has a much different take on potatoes, namely that they're not the great evil many believe them to be. They're also a rich source of potassium, which most of us don't get enough of.

so potatoes alone made America fat?

oh no, it's the potato debate again. I've seen this one before. not going to get involved.

Low-fat diets are no longer popular because we've realized we need a certain amount of essential fat to function well. It's not a LOT of fat and some sources are better than others, but the under 30% of calories from truly low-fat diets and the 10% of cals that some ultra low-fat diets suggest is not good long-term.
