Evie1010's Journal, 11 January 2011

Finding myself a bit 'stuck' I am determined to figure out how to fix it. I decided to do some detective work and really study my past victories on this WL journey in hopes to implement again what has worked well for me to jumpstart my January WL. My findings were pretty interesting.

I went back to the times when my WL was most rapid - losing a pound a day or at least 3-4# per week. I wanted to see exactly what I was eating, and what my daily RDI and percentiles were for those respective days.

I noticed that most of the days I was eating about the same foods as I currently am right now, except for one factor. The soup. Every single day that I ate my low-carb creation of Vegetable Beef Soup resulted in a one pound WL the following day. Every single day without fail. Isn't that interesting? I made a big batch of it in November (the week before leaving for Cancun) and the duration of time I was eating it, my WL was most rapid. The same in December - I made a big batch and nursed on that for several days, and the same thing happened. Rapid WL that particular week. That is really the only difference I see in my diet calender.

Here are some similarities I have seen during those respective rapid WL weeks and now, compared to what I am currently doing:
- The water was good then - but even better now, as I am drinking 100 oz per day.
- My net carbs varied from 18-23 then; not too much difference now.
- My caloric intake for that particular week in Nov averaged about 1800.
- My caloric intake for the respective week in Dec averaged right at 2000 (my daily RDI is 2300 - and I am not supposed to go to below 500 calories below that). Anywhere between 1800-2100 is okay.
- My average percentiles for that week in Nov were: 5% Carb, 60% Fat, 35% Protein (same as now)
- The average percentiles for that week in Dec: 7% Carb, 48% Fat, 44% Protein - it's even better now as I am staying close to the Atkins recommended 5/65/30

So what I plan to do to jumpstart my WL for this week is get to the grocery store and stock up on the ingredients for my soup, as there must be something in the combination of those ingredients that expedites rapid fat-burning for me. We'll see what happens. I hope to see some good losses resulting from this experiment based on my hypothesis - which will hopefully boost my momentum once again.

The only other alternative is that ketosis has not set in due to the fact my my friend, Keto, is afraid to come around because the infamous "scale-gremlin" continues to be chained to my chimney in protection and consideration of my FS buddies. Having his freezing, screaming, putrid, isolated-form writhing and cursing on my chimney would keep anyone away!! Anybody want to volunteer to take him off my hands? Anyone?

Maybe I will share my soup recipe with the one who helps release me from this plight - and takes temporary custody of the scale gremlin. Ya'll know I just can't let him loose - who knows who'll he attack next?! Perhaps to those who refuse to help, maybe, just maybe I will be like the famous "Soup Nazi" of Seinfeld: "No soup for you!" LOL - j/k

Evie, have you checked, double checked, and triple checked all your calculations as well as for hidden carbs? Especially the hidden carbs. Surprisingly enough you can be consuming far more than you thought which can kick you right out of ketosis. Another thing you can check, is be sure you are testing (ketosticks) at different times (morning, afternoon, and night) as these can give varying differences. Another few things that can cause you to stall are SF products, sugar substitutes, and cheeses. Maybe try eliminating the SF goodies and cheese and see if it helps.

Yes I have - it's all accurate. And I don't use the pee sticks. Stuff I have read indicate that they are not all that helpful, useful, and the Atkins site no longer promotes them as they used to, so I have heard. I don't use a lot of sugar substitutes - and what I do use is super low-carb-diet friendly. It does not cause cravings like Splenda does and contains no sugar alcohols and it is fiber-enriched which helps to cancel out any stray carbohydrates. What I do use of it is minimal, and I strongly feel it is not slowing me down. I've felt I needed the cheese to get my numbers where they should be, although I don't consume a whole lot of it.

If you aren't using the sticks how do you know that you are not in ketosis? I'm just curious. I'm not saying you have to test with them but it's the only way to know for sure that you aren't already.

Weight Loss happens consistently
11 Jan 11 by member: Evie1010
Yes we typically lose quickly when we are in ketosis but not always. Sometimes after a good loss our bodies will need to re-adjust (even if in ketosis) and will slow down or stop for a little while. If this is the case - be patient and you will start losing again.

Yes, I am aware of the readjusting period even during ketosis. Waiting patiently... :)

Well alrighty then. Sounds like I am a broken record in your head about now. Guess I can't tell you anything that you don't already know. lol - crossing my fingers it happens soon for you.

LOL! Girl, you're a hoot! Love it! No, thanks for your input...always appreciated. Thanks for your well-wishes. And I'll thank ya even more if take Big Bad Bart, the scale gremlin off my hands (I named him over the weekend.) Hee hee... Honk! Honk!

Hmm I wonder if I chain the scale gremlin to our chimney he might stop birds from falling down it LOL! Now there is an idea! Doesn't he disturb you when watching tv though? And how do you clean up his slobber??
11 Jan 11 by member: squigglywiggly
Suiggs, you just might have something there, hon. He sure can be a pain during chill-time watching TV. We just turn the sound up. It's worse during the daytime b/c our chimney is right outside of my home-office window. My lab, Daisy growls at him. Big Bad Bart growls back. It goes on for-stinkin-ever. Uggh! As for the slobber? Not a problem - it freezes up; so his vile face is adorned with several good sized drool-cicles.

Squiggly the best way to keeps birds from coming down your chimney is to light a fire under their feathery asses.

Hmmm that might be okay in the winter, but not in our summer heat LOL.

Soup sounds so good on a snowy day like today. Did you say you were going to share the recipe Evie? Please do! You are a great investigator. As for the scale gremlin...I say GO! Make way for your friend Ketosis. Have a super fantastic day 'sis'. Hugs{{{}}}

So impressive that you studied your history and found a pattern. I say go with you hypothesis for sure! Soup, soup, soup. I just got done watching a video about weight loss and how it is a scientific fact that soup makes us feel satisfied longer; it prevents the stomach from sending those pesky "feed me" messages to our brain. The study fed the same foods to two different test groups. One group got it in regular form...potaotes meat, veggie. The other group got the same nutrients but blended with water to make a soup. AMAZING and scientific results. I will take the gremlin from you. Too bad you named him cuz he wont live long. I will use him in the soup recipe!!!! HOW many net carbs in a gremlin???

And please keep us updated to the soup's outcome. ~tig

Sophie, thanks for stopping by. I am so glad your investigation paid off so well for you. I'm checking my hypothesis - we'll see if there is any validity to it - I strongly feel there may be. The eight days I ate it I lost a pound the very next day...that's pretty fast! I will plan on sharing my low carb soup recipe soon.

Cindy, thanks for your comments. Yes I do plan on sharing the recipe with my buddies. Hopefully mr. slim ball gremlin will be outta here soon!

Robin, that is so neat that you saw a WL program on the fat-burning benefits of soup...the same day I post this journal. How cool is that?! I appreciate your input a lot because it kinda validates my personal hypothesis. I kinda thought "No, it couldn't be" when I first looked at my Nov stats. But then when I saw the same exact results in Dec - and the only change was the soup, I thought "There just may be something to this." Thanks so very much for your willingness to take the gremlin. You are such a dear!! I'm sure he is all-protein; but he's so stinky -- you wouldn't want him near your kitchen! (I wouldn't want you to have Big Bad Bart, sweet friend - you're doing so great. Couldn't bear for you to be slowed down one bit...) We'll just let Mr. Keto kick his butt when he gets here. Sending you love and hugs...
