Dear Amy, Atkins WOE does effect the liver so you need to talk to your doctor about it. Check the Atkins website and see if they can tell you more. Good luck and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Amy - pls take whatever steps necessary to ensure your good health! We will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers! Follow their best advice regarding your WOE, but if you do have to leave following the Atkins plan - please reintroduce carbs (healthy ones - slowly) over a multi week period. Fruits, nuts, veggies, whole grains, legumes, etc... you will never HAVE to reintroduce processed carbs, sugars and junk if you don't want to. Pls keep us up-to-speed on what's what...and again, lifting you in prayer for a speedy and immediate healing!

Well, here it is...not really what I wanted to hear from my doctor:
The . Anyone with liver or kidney disease should avoid this type of high protein content diet-like the Atkins diet as it stresses the liver and kidneys. Now I didn't post this to freak anyone out-clearly I have a special situation with already having a liver disease. I will now have to add way more fiber, more veggies and fruit and less protein and fat. I am NOT going to pick a 'diet' but instead monitor my calories and just make different choices...sigh just when I had this all down pat too!

My grandma had pancreatic (SP?) attack when she did Atkins. She was very worried about me starting this diet and advised me not to. I told her everyone was different. At least I hope so lol. Good luck to you and I hope you get everything figured out and start doing better without having to gain weight back :(

so sorry to hear about your difficulty, take care of your health. I'm just curious why your doctor didnt inform you of a particular way to eat that would be in your best interest, if they know high protein and fat is not good, shouldnt a patient be advised of that? Hope everything goes well for you, maybe that explains why you have not been losing also, your body didn't agree with what you were trying to do.

Feeling Fatter, honestly until I saw my recent blood work didn't I even think about my diet affecting my liver. To be fair to the doctor-I never asked either. It's ok though, I'll make some adjustments-sticking to my current RDI, no sugary stuff still and lowering my fat/protein. I think it'll be a little difficult to switch and may even have an initial gain-but I am ok with that if it means I can reverse what I did to myself over the last year. And the good news is I am not needing the chemo as of yet. I will re-test in a month to see if there have been any changes. Most of all I will miss the Atkins discussion groups :( I probably won't leave them right away since I do still want to be involved with my buddies, but may not be as active as I was even though I still have good info to offer.

Amy, you health is what is most important. You have your FS diet in the written form. Take that to your doctor and show him what you have been eating. Atkins isn't as high protein as it once was, I was on it before. I under that a ketogenic diet might be wrong for somebody who have liver disease. I agree with Paula that you don't have to reintroduce the bad carbs. You might just need to be modify what you have been doing but not change everything.

and stick with us here, you have so many friends and supportive people to help you through. Regarding the diet, I just think if a person has a certain ailement that is affected by external factors like eating, drinking, meds, whatever, there should be a standard checklist of do's and dont's up front so that people are aware of what can be dangerous to their health. Keep us posted, praying for you

Amy, I am so sorry that you are going through this. I would definately take a list of what you have been eating daily and ask the doctor about it. Perhaps you can modify the Atkins WOE with the doctors help. And I will be praying for you to have a complete and rapid recovery!
