BadAndee's Journal, 13 April 2008

I just officially changed my diet to Atkins on this site, and listed the correct weight. Unfortunately, it looks like i've posted a gain, when it fact, that gain happened just shortly after I finished up phase 1 with the SB diet, in January! I could never bring myself to post it because just seeing the scale fluctuate so much ruined my day!

That's all changed now because I know the scale is moving, and now that things are happening with my body for sure! Gone are the MONTHS of plateaus! I don't feel discouraged anymore to see 114...I know that it's an obstacle that I can conquer now! Also, that was days ago, so hopefully I weigh less now. I definitely feel it!

It is SO AMAZING how you can consume high quantities of all fats and then watch your body shed FAT! That fact will make anybody turn their head in shock! What is interesting is that the more fat you consume, the faster you lose weight! (because fat satiates your appitite, therefore you eat less overall...as long as you don't add carbs, because the opposite will happen, then).
I'm on day 10 (I think??) of the induction on Atkins. I don't feel compelled to count the days because i'm not suffering and I don't feel like I can't live like this! I'm feeling like a new, different person already! I ate lunch right after church today (11:30am) and I haven't eaten since. NOBODY can tell me now that carbs are any good for us. For me, they have a definite effect on me. I've learned that they make me feel constant hunger. The more carbs I eat, the worse it gets! Even eating the recommended amount of 15-20 gram a day of carbs have been too much for me, at least right now!

There have been a few days already where I haven't eaten more than about 4-7 grams of carbs for the whole entire day, and those are the days that I feel no hunger whatsoever! I'm still eating at every meal, but I'm not starving and overeating to feel better, like I did when I'd suffer an episode of hypoglycemia. I thought it was all the running that I was doing that was causing those energy crashes and bouts of HUNGER, but I was soooo wrong!

The way my energy feels now is really interesting! I guess the best way to describe it would be to compare it to someone who constantly needs caffeine from soda or coffee as their energy source. My source of energy was from all those carbs, so I was definitely running off of glucose! My old diet consisted of 90% carbohydrates and very little protein, very low amounts of poly or mono fats, with definitely NO saturated fat. I mean, after all, this is the perfect diet, according to the US Government and the food pyramid!!

*In the book, 'Good Calories Bad Calories', the author points out how we've been scammed by believing that this is the perfect way to eat! It is NOT how our neanderthal ancestors ate! (that got me to thinking!) They didn't have simple sugars like cookies, breads, cake, candy, ice cream, flour enriched foods, processed foods, or the assortment of grains in almost everything we buy now! It's no wonder that our food allergies are thru the roof, with all the stuff they put in foods these days, then we get sick, have symptoms like diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, etc, and we have no idea what is wrong with us, because it could be almost ANYTHING! Our ancestors ate meat, a small variety of nuts, vegetation and whatever fruit was in season where they lived. Simple stuff, natural stuff, that's all! They didn't have trouble with their weight!

I was amazed when I heard the statistics for American Children today. It was something like 86% of them are now overweight and the number is growing! This problem has only come upon us in this generation alone! That should tell us that our diet is a huge factor here! The Government likes to blame all this on inactivity, and overeating but that's simply not true! They have even recently admitted on national television that the amount of carbs recommended on the food pyramid is way off! It's been proven that the majority of even extremely obese people do NOT overeat! (unless they're addicted to simple carbs)

Simply put, if it's processed and unnatural, has tons of ingredients that you cannot even pronounce, don't eat it!

Hugs to you all

Wow Andee are you a converted advocate to Atkins or what!!?? I find that when I cut back on bread I have far less cravings and more energy. I completely agree with what you say about eating natural stuff - I definitely try and stay away from processed foods as much as possible. Nowadays I hardly ever eat refined carbohydrates - white bread, rice, pasta etc. Its been bleached in order to get it white! One thing that also worries me is that it is still hard to get meat, poultry, diary and fruit and veg that hasnt been tampered with. As a student I really cant afford to buy organic. I hate the thought of my fruit and veg being sprayed with pesticides, or the cows/pigs/chicken/turkey/etc being injected with antibiotics, or living in cramped conditions, and then the meat being pumped with water in order to make it appear plump and fresh. Yuk. Sorry about the ramblings there. Glad to hear its working so well for ya. x

Something else, is that I have found carbs to be surprisingly high in calories for what you get, unlike fruit and vegetables, which you can eat loads of, or protein such as lean meat and poultry that fill you up longer. Most people have massive portions of pasta, rice and noodles, when really one portion size is about 2-3 tablespoons!

BRAVO!! Way to go on find a food system that is working so well for you!! Keep up the great work!!

Juno, you're so right about high calories hiding in those carbs. Fat might have more calories per gram, but there's usually 5 times (Or more!)carbs than fat in our food! IT's hard to ignore that. Also, the Govt's only true argument is that we are overeating the items that are high in carbs, like pasta, rice, noodles...but then, when you eat that stuff, your glucose levels shoot up like a rocket, insulin gets dumped into the blood stream to lower the sugar levels...in an hour or two, you're craving more food!

Watch out! You're starting to sound like me! LOL. I know what you mean. I was in shock and awe too when I first read GCBC. I felt so betrayed when I figured out that the food pyramid was a lie. Well, at least we know now.

Strolls in to your presence and genuflects in awe..... well done ohh most wonderous one and may you continue to succeed with grace and applomb... Ya know I too have felt betrayed.... betrayed and wounded by one who was such a great friend to me... that dastardly Mr Willie White bread and its cousin... Charlie Coffee cake!! Ohhh yes they (wags fingers) "pretended" to be my pals but once they got me all stodgy and 'bleh' they disappeared, never called never helped! typical carbs! I remember reading a book that was recommended to me once called 'Eat through your blood type' by Dr. Thingymabob (or someone similiar) and ya know.... it nearly described the Atkins to a tee... so many reasons for paying particular attention to the processed foods and carbs that can actually be acting like a quasi poison to our system.... Well done you... *s*

I'm disowning you if you are switching to evil Atkins, LOL, just kidding. Hope it works. Sorry I just got burmned by trhat particualar diet more than any others I've been on;I stuck with it for about two months once(a LONG time ago!, like 10 years!), lost 20 pounds, quit, gained it all back, plus more in 2 weeks! So I hate Atkins now...but I know it works for a lot of people, it just depends on can you stick with it long term I guess. Best of luck to you!
