I did well on Atkins several years ago until some unrelated medical issues came up. I never bothered jumping back on the wagon but gained more than I lost and it is definitely time for action.

Dream Big Goal: Lose 3 pounds a week. Lose 50 pounds in 17 weeks and would put me at around 242 at the beginning of May. I would reach my goal weight in 39 weeks (October.)

Realistic Goal: Lose 1.5 pounds a week. Lose 25 pounds in 17 weeks and I would be around 267 the beginning of May. Total Goal weight in 78 weeks (July 2014.)

There is definitely something to what you are saying. I found that one shake or a bar a day has been ok for me but two or a shake and a bar then I stall completely and actually feel cruddy for a few days.
