Dominos Advertising WTF?
It's not the app, its the browser. It just tracks what you browse and picks ads to show you based on that. Ads make the site/app free for us.

Good Shoes
Well, good shoes really depend on the type of foot you have and the bio-mechanics of your body. Do you have flat feet? High arches? Once you figure out if you overpronate (flat feet) or supinate (high arches), you'll have a better idea of what type of shoe would help you out.

I would suggest visiting a running-specific store to get fitted (even though you might not be running for cardio), not just one of the big sports stores. The sales people should be runners themselves and want to watch how you walk barefoot before putting you in a shoe. If you want, just go in and tell them you need advice on what type of shoe to get. You don't necessarily have to buy from them (although, I would because they are usually a small, local business).

It could get expensive. I drop $100 on sneakers every 9-12 months. But they are worth it (to me at least, I have flat feet and knee problems). But once you have a little more knowledge about your feet, you're better able to shop around for good prices or last year's models.

Also, it's worth noting that it will depend on the activity you want to do most. Are you just using gym cardio machines? Taking Zumba or spinning classes? Step? For example, if you were going to do zumba mostly, but supplement with the elliptical, you'd want to find a cross training shoe that would have a pivot point on the sole to allow you do to certain zumba moves more easily.

Dieting alone
If you're looking for some family friendly recipes, I recommend skinnytaste.com. It's a blog and the woman running it has everything tested by her picky husband and kids - she has great ideas and everything comes with WW points+ and nutritional info. It's a lifesaver, really!

what should my running goals be? i.e . how long should it take me to run 5km?
Can't hurt to check out the Couch to 5k program at coolrunning.com. Granted, it's usually for new runners, but you could also use their program to get faster - use their walking parts as jogging and the running parts as fast running.
