Sandy701's Journal, 26 June 2012

3.4 miles walked today; doggies 1.2 miles. UGH Index a 7, being saved by the back breezes from TS Debby.

Thank you Notfast, Buffy, Bren, and GG for the comments on yesterday's journal. I'm trying hard to work myself to some semblance of "CALM" about this, but it's darn hard! I mean, we're talking about life and health!!!

What it will ultimately boil down to is...Do I REALLY believe what I'm doing is THE BEST option for my health? And studies just have me pulling my hair out!!! Sorry, but a study of 6 people (actually found a "study" of TWO people...)done over 2 weeks doesn't carry a lot of weight with me - no pun intended! I really wish I had majored in nutritional science in college or some such related field.

Working on reading everything I can find on cholesterol and low carb. Found a study cited on numerous sites....Sweden, this year....anyway, it's actually laughable that they consider the "diet" in the study to be low carb when they also talk about the study participants' BMIs steadily increasing throughout the study! Foods associated with the high fat intake in this Swedish study were "fats used for spreading on bread and cooking, dairy products, oil for salad dressing or cooking, various types of meats, and sausages, as main dishes or on sandwiches, pizza, deep fried potato chips, French fries, including corn chips and popcorn." Their average carb intake was about 46% of their daily calories!

Whoever would believe THAT'S low carb? Yet, the headline is that low carb creates problems! Amazing.... Luckily there ARE rebuttals out there, including a more detailed analysis on Mark's Daily Apple, but you just know we'll all run across someone who will warn us about low-carbing in light of that Swedish study that just came out this year......!!!!

Sorry about the UGH factor walking, we had that yesterday morning, but this morning actually had a nice breeze, not saying it was cool just not so humid. Don't know if this will help or not, but last year at my physical my bloodwork was really good, cholesteral down, everything down. I was more disciplined on Atkins last year than I have been this year, so wondering what tomorrows bloodwork will show. Last year my doctor also told me that most of the time it's not about the diet & cholesteral levels, but more about a person's genetic makup ! I've known people who have done atkins, lost 40+ pounds, but cholesteral went up, then others it was exact opposite, so go figure. Maybe my doctor is right about the genetics thing ? Maybe the more you read, the more you are stressing out ??? Take care :)

One way to look at it - if you think your blood work is messed up now, think how it would look if you hadn't lost 80 pounds!

FYI - my cholesterol didn't change one little bit after 1 year on Atkins & losing 40 + pounds...so, I am leaning towards the genetic factor playing a really large role in those numbers. When they got all done with the dizying array of all the numbers, this one high, that one just right, this other one too low, she told me they plugged them into some formula which spits out another number she called a risk factor, risk factor for having a heart attack or stroke that is, & I was a 2 she said, then congratulated me! WTF is what I was thinking...really? A TWO? I came away with the idea that maybe it was best to look at the overall big picture...kind of like appraising a used car, some good parts, some not so good, etc., maybe worth a test drive at least!

Notfast, you're right....the more I read the more I'm stressing....and that will NEVER help get this last pound off of me!!!!!!

Buffy, that's just about exactly what DH said to me.

GG, something like that happened to me a couple check-ups ago. The doctor at the time came in, barely looked at me, and began to ask me questions, plugging my answers into the computer. When he finished, he said "OK, we don't need to do anything right now..." Then he said I could go. I was appalled that I had to take my time and drive in for that appointment only to have barely 10 seconds of face-to-face time....he spent more time looking at that computer screen than me. Luckily, the doctor I saw recently was MUCH more personable. I just hope he's really knowledgeable about Atkins/low carb and how it can affect the lipid panel.

I have to agree with your DH and Buffy on this one... also you may want to have those test done again before you do anything drastic..So glad your calming down..that doesn't do you any good to be worried about it..Take care of you...:O)

Bren, I go from "OK, I can handle this, probably nothing to worry about" to "OMG...my heart is beating....am I on the verge of a heart attack?" Re-testing is certainly an option I will bring up if the doctor doesn't. It's amazing (and sad) that I can go from being a happy, bright-outlook person to a serious worry-wart just because of some numbers on a piece of paper. Gotta work on my ATTITUDE!!

I am sorry that your results have caused you so much worry. I really don't know much about cholesterol levels; I just look for the acceptable levels checkmark. I do know that stress does not help anything! Take it easy, have the tests redone then make a decision. Good luck!

Sandy if its your cholestrol thas up they do have meds for that..Also it may not be your diet as much as your own body that produces it..my DH's whole family has this problems..and they are on Lipator..no side affects on them any way...I know, I'm like you I hate to take meds of any kind..but its a neccessary evil..Sending Hugs and Love sweetie...:O)

Lisa, that's what I used to do but some of mine are definitely outside the "normal" parameters. What this IS doing, however, is making me read up on this topic and what I'm finding, is rather eye-opening!

You're right Bren, it's truly not so much one's diet as genetics and one's body's tendency to produce cholesterol. That's why the "dumping of the cholesterol out of the fat cells," as happens after about 30 pounds lost, makes so much sense to me.
