dwhummers's Journal, 17 February 2008

I have actually been on Atkins since Jan 07,08. My beginning weight was 284 lbs. My last weigh in was 275. I am trying not to weigh in but once a week. Insulin is large barrier to weight loss, and the new medication, Lyrica, is another obstacle. I gain 7 lbs the first week I was on the Lyrica. :( Atkins is going to be a lifestyle change for me. The best result of over a month of Atkins is I have cut my daily insulin use in HALF! The next step is to get the nerve pain under control, and then I am adding water aerobics.
275.0 lb Lost so far: 9.0 lb.    Still to go: 35.0 lb.    Diet followed 100%.

I was on a steroid last year and can relate to the weight gain. I told my doctor that I do that fine on my own, thank you! I certainly don't need his help! But the good news is that weight dropped fairly fast after I got going. It sounds like you're off to a great start. Atkins is by far the best choice for you - it's what I'm doing, too. I don't know why I ever tried anything else!

Yes, I agree with your comments to the doctor. I really let my doctor know what I thought about the "side-effect". Insulin dependent diabetics have an uphill battle with weight loss. Gotta keep going though!

I wish you well. I'm glad you found the Atkins diet, and this site. I found this site in October when it was briefly mentioned on the Today show, which I only occasionally get to see. I've upped my carb intake so much and my weight has plateued now so I realize I need to limit my carb intake again but this definitely is the diet for me. Everyone keeps telling me I'll go off the diet but I'm not going to as it has been such a health benefit and the weight loss will be permanent as long as I continue to the Atkins plan. Remember don't listen to any naysayers and you can get to any weight goal you set for yourself!!! :)

I think you made a great choice with Atkins. You are among friends. Some of us had to overcome medication issues that messed up our metabolism. I am no longer on the medication that made me gain weight and slowed my metabolism but I was on it for over 2 years and it had lasting effects. I do a lot better on this plan than on any other. Good job so far. Keep it up.
