Fledgist's Journal, 11 February 2011

This week I've started to wear 44" waist jeans and they fit perfectly. C'est merveilleux. I've got 44" waist slacks too but they're a little snug yet so maybe next week they'll fit perfectly. The jeans fit perfectly, however. It looks as if my next purchase will have to have a 42" waist. This is real progress, considering that a year ago my waistline was 60" and I was straining against it. I wore a 20" neck shirt yesterday and it was blousing out. The 17½-inch neck shirt I'm wearing today fits perfectly. When I ordered that size a month ago, Gail thought I was being daring. Now I'm thinking that I should be ordering a 17" neck next. My neck and collar, for some reason, shrank well before the rest of me.

I've just read that one issue for obesity is a waistline above 40 inches. Mine's been that for years. Now I've been working on reducing my weight and it's come down with what everyone says is remarkable speed.

My waistline a year ago was about 20 inches greater than it is now. I just tried on my old blazer yesterday evening. I could almost fit another me in front of myself in it. Clearly, I'm getting somewhere. I've dropped 130+ lbs in 10½ months. That I still have 79 pounds to go is a statement about how far gone I was as much as about how far I have to go.
243.0 lb Lost so far: 94.0 lb.    Still to go: 75.0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

That is awesome! I know I always got really jazzed when I could fit into a smaller size. I'm still working on my waist. It's the most critical fat for your health. It's good your neck area went down. I heard heaviness there can lead to heart attack.

I'll be seeing my nephrologist next month. It was his prompting, last March, that got me to start dieting (he asked me if I'd considered bariatric surgery). I'm wondering what he'll say. I'm happy each time I have to get a smaller size (I'm not sure my bank account is). With luck, and some exercise, I may be down another three-four pounds by the end of the month; that's my hope, anyway. I doubt that will trim an inch off the waistline, but every little bit helps.

Your nephrologist should be thrilled with your progress. I bet he doesn't see too many patients who have managed to accomplish what you have. Fantastic job, buddy!

Thanks. I'm amazed myself. It's a real struggle and I keep feeling that each ounce that comes off is a battle. But as I start looking back, I realise that I have come a long way. When I look at what are considered healthy weights and measurements, though, I realise that I have some way to go. I've just been explaining to a colleague -- who looks slim to me, but whose doctor has told him that he needs to lose weight -- that his ideal weight is not far below mine, although he needs to lose only about 25 lbs.
