Djburney's Journal, 18 November 2012

Well...I'm at my lowest so far, after doubling my caloric intake this week. I dropped out of the 190s, down to 189. Hmmm...I was going to wait until tomorrow to write a summary of my first week of Low Carb High Fat (LCHF), but since it has been a full week, and tomorrow is a work day, I think I'll do it today while I have plenty of time.

Prior to this week, I pretty much kept my calories below 1000, often around 800, and I lost about 55 pounds doing that. It wasn't fun, but not all that hard because I was so determined to lose weight. Then, it just stopped. How could I be eating so little, and not losing weight? I was hovering at around 193, dropping sometimes but always going back to 193. This went on for weeks. I think I had finally reached a starvation point where my body had to protect itself and slow my metabolism to a point where I wasn't losing weight.

I had often noticed that as long as I was eating low carb, adding some salad dressing or eating a steak did not seem to affect my weight loss too much. And several of my friends were very successful on a Paleo diet, so I was aware of it. About a week ago, it was brought to the forefront of my attention by a FS member, who has been kind enough to guide me, handhold, and provide plenty of study material on the LCHF way of eating.

I started last Monday. If you look at my food diary, you will see heavy cream for my coffee, bacon and eggs for breakfast, butter, salmon, olive oil, avocado, nuts, and very little fruit, absolutely no grains or starches. I've been eating about 2000 calories a day. The only exercise I've been doing is about 1 hour of walking each day. I have felt completely satiated, never hungry, and I can go for 6 or 7 hours between meals. In fact, since I tend to eat breakfast late, I've been able to just have two meals a day instead of three, although three would be fine, too. If I ever do feel hungry between meals, I just have a small handful of nuts or a slice of cheese, and I'm fine.

I also had a little wine and vodka this weekend, and still lost weight. The wine is dry, so the sugar content is very low, same for vodka. I like vodka with just ice or club soda, so no additional sugar there. As you know if you have been reading my journals, Debbie likes her wine :-)

So, how do I feel? Simply amazing. You would think that with all that fat, I'd be feeling full and heavy, but that is not the case at all. I feel light and have no bloating or water retention. You know that feeling when you wake up and you can feel that you have lost weight? I have that every morning now. My mind is clearer, I feel like I can hike the trails as long as I want without getting fatigued. Yesterday, I had this weird nesting urge, not sure if it is related, but I was cleaning out drawers and closets, organizing my house, and dancing while I was doing it.

If you are interesting in researching this for yourself, a great place to start is www.dietdoctor.com, and go from there. Be sure to watch the videos of doctors and scientists being interviewed, that is how I learned a lot of this.

The bottom line is...I have hope again that I am going to reach my goal of 150-160. If you read this far, thanks for sticking with me on a long post!

I'm happy you've found something that's working so well for you! It sure sounds a lot better than the low-low calories you were on before. I've been hearing so much about Paleo on here lately; it all sounds good (though I love my whole grains too much to try it myself). I definitely feel more satiated when I eat more healthy fats; I love a couple tablespoons of pistachios, or some fresh ground almond butter. Did you have music playing while you were nesting? Something with a Latin rhythm really helps with my housework, but then I'm the Zumba addict. :o)

Oh yes, music for sure! I use Spotify on my computer or iPhone and my bluetooth speaker, so I'm all set up for any kind of music I'm in the mood for. Probably why I was dancing!

Yup - many folks here love the LCHF way of eating. Great that it is working for you!

It's actually interesting to see that you drifted so easily and rapidly into ketosis. Many other suffer from the "Atkin's flu" or linger for a week or two before getting to the point were they get by with 2 meals/day. If you follow the usual progression you should feel in a week or so that you are much more calm and focused. It might even be difficult to get you to lose your temper, so if you want to throw a tatrum I suggest you do it within the next couple of days.
