Day 15 of not smoking. I had Chipotle for lunch. I figure as long as I'm not smoking, I'm allowed to indulge in Chipotle for lunch. I had a salad. I went to the gym and did better on the elliptical - I did 3000 steps on it in 28 minutes, which is the second time I've been able to keep up that pace at my current resistance. I also ran 3/4 of a mile again. The only thing holding me back running are my ankles. I run 3/4 of a mile and my ankles are burning again. I figure the more I run, the more my ankles will get conditioned and I can run farther on them. 4 miles an hour is beginning to feel really slow, but I want to get to at least 1 mile before I crank up the speed. I want to run two miles so bad, and then 3.5. I want to be a runner! My 80 year old stepdad is giving me hella lectures on how bad running is and how I shouldn't do it. Granted, I'm going to be 40 in August, but I honestly feel the benefits outweigh the risks when it comes to running on the treadmill in the gym. My knees are fine, and after I do some walking my ankles are usually fine. I can't think of anything else that is great of a personal challenge as running. I have been avoiding running my whole life, and now that I'm doing it, it's super slow progress but I just want to do more. It's taken me 5 months to go from no running at all to running 3/4 of a mile. I am hoping to run a mile by the end of the month. I feel like after I run a mile, it will be so much easier to start adding distance and I'll finally be a "real" runner. I have so much work ahead of me!

firstly, i commend your 15 days smoke free! that's awesome-keep it up! AND...you are going to be running a 5K in no time. I struggle with ankle problems from running and my chiropractor adjusted them for me regularly and recommened that I get a shoe that has a light support to it. It made a world of a difference. Running can be injury free if you are careful and I certainly think the pros outweight the cons. Also, I give my ankles ice baths after a long run. It's excruciating...but worth it because afterwards the pain is completely gone!
