DairyKing's Journal, 30 May 2012

Up at 4. Jogged 2 miles, walked another half mile. Cooler this morning - about 55 degrees. Could have run farther; don't want to overdo it; just getting back into the swing of things, and don't want to take chances. GPS said 2.0 miles, Nike+ said 1.99! Funny thing is, I didn't calibrate it or anything. I think I'm just going to wait until my stride is more consistent before I start tweaking on anything.

My doggie has a new private chef - Me! I know the pancreatitus affects his appetite, but he just couldn't bring himself to eat the Science Diet canned food the Vet sent home. Even the Vet said it wouldn't be very appetizing. He was right. The Vet said I could cook him up his meals, as long as it was low fat and low sodium. So, I removed all the fat from a boneless chicken breast, and boiled it up in about 2 cups of water, along with about a cup of stir fry vegetables. Then I made about 8 servings of brown rice and mixed it all together. Gave him about 3/4 cup of it last night, and he ate it like he was starving to death!

The little guy is used to me giving him a snack after I take him out to do his business. The Vet said "No snacks", probably just because you just can't buy snacks with no fat and no sodium - and made in the USA. The Vet said the Chicken Tenders that I normally give him, that are made in China, could well have caused his ailment to begin with. So, I removed all the fat from 2 more chicken breasts, and cut them into 1/4 inch thick pieces, and ran them in the dehydrator overnight, and - Voila - he now has very low fat, no sodium, made in the USA chicken jerky treats. I tried one and it was actually quite tasty. As a matter of fact, the bland rice, veggie and chicken dish wasn't too shabby either. If I ate like that more often, I wouldn't look like I do now either.

DW says she is feeling about 50% better (last night). Another week before she gets the first treatment of the milder chemo drug. Keeping fingers crossed that she tolerates it better. I'm not expecting miracles; just looking for a little relief here. Since she wasn't hungry, I figured I was on a roll with the chicken, so I fried myself up another chicken breast, and tossed one of those pre-mixed spicey rice dishes (that I'm sure was loaded with sodium) into the microwave, and enjoyed my solitary dining experience. Then, back to work, watering all the trees and flowers outside. It was near 90 yesterday. Haven't seen any rain for quite some time - and we sure could use some. Also, I could use the extra hour I spend watering everything. :)

Well, I've rambled on long enough. Here's hoping all of you have a wonderful day today; I'm looking forward to reading all about it. Toodles!

That's one lucky dog! Glad he's feeling better and glad DW is feeling better too. I'm hoping the milder treatments are much more manageable. Have a great day!

Your doggie meals actually sounds good. I would add some spices to that and enjoy it for dinner. Tell doggie to move over, he has a dinner date. lol. Glad wifey is making progress on her treatments. One day at a time and she will be done with all the treatments. The new pic is cute. Is that your grandson? Have a great day King chef :)

Yeah, the little booger is my great grandson. I was bouncing him on my knee, and DW says, "I think he's asleep." I said, "No way." I quit bouncing him and he just collapsed like that. I guess the pic says it all.

Please provide more information about the "chicken tenders" that are made in China that you used to give your dog as snacks. Now you have made me very nervous. Mine gets the chicken jerky strips rolled around dried sweet potato. Thank you very, very much.

Sounds like your doggie is livin it up. Mine love the ground meat and rice diet they get when one has an upset stomach for more than a day or two... Making giant batches is the way to go!

Buffy, I know the ones you are talking about; I think those are Vitalife, or something like that. In fact, I was going to get the ones with duck wrapped around the sweet potatoes. There is no bulletin on those - yet. Mine were Waggin Train Chicken Tenders. I almost lost the dog twice - once when 'Ol Roy dog food in a pouch from China was tainted, and this time with the chicken tenders. There are 1000's of cases claiming the chicken tenders as the culprit. Problem is that these things are not regulated by the FDA, and when it comes to animals - even if you could prove it was their product that caused the harm - the only legal liability is the 'cost' to replace the animal. There are no legal statutes for emotional trauma, or family loss, etc. when it comes to an animal. I'm done with the China thing. There is salmonilla, pancreatitus, hepititus, and a host of other things that can be caused by tainted food. I've seen the conditions in which these foods are processed overseas. They usually say 'distributed by a company in the US' but the product comes from China. And since nobody has been able to pinpoint the actual bacteria or whatever causes this problem, the likelihood of testing for it is pretty slim. So, let your conscience be your guide. I did a search and found one small company in one of the New England states making low fat chicken tender snacks, but there aren't many of them in the U.S.

Very interesting about the waggin train chicken tenders, because I had bought several treats of that brand in the past, here and there, and eventually pinpointed those as the culprit to upset stomachs, no matter what it was, that was the brand. I think I need to research what I'm giving them a little better! I bought some home made natural treats at the farmers market last week and sadly the dogs don't like them :(

Buffy, go to 'animalhealthfoundation' on the web - add net extension to url; see dangerous dog treats warning. Can't paste the url here, but I think you can find it.

My dog LOVES salt free green beans (Libby's is the one I find here). We can't even say green beans around him. We say GB and talk in code. He has lots of allergies so he can't have chicken.

On that website I pointed you to - in News and Events - scrolling down - Sen from Ohio February of this year urges FDA to take quick action concerning dog treats coming from China.

Has anyone tried any of the vegetable or meat baby foods? I was looking at the labels for some of them, and they seem to have low fat and sodium.

Bless you DK... If your not looking after DW, your looking after your doggie's welfare and then the plants welfare ...... A man of many talents :-)

I am so impressed that you made food for your dog! What a lucky pup he is. As for DW, I pray she tolerates the new drug OK. Cancer is such a beast. I hope she will feel some relief soon.

DW seems to be doing a lot better this evening. Some foods taste good, others don't; but that's better than her mouth hurting and nothing tasting good. So, progress. Dog doesn't want to eat, regardless of DK's culinary prowess. Vet says don't force him; he'll come around, his pancreas has taken a huge shock, so need to keep him on nausea and pain medicine for a while. Other than he used to be such a glutton, and he's not yet, he seems perfectly normal now. He doesn't pass up the homemade chicken jerky treats though; he loves them. :D Did some pushups, squats and abdominal exercises tonight. Still fat; I don't understand it. Anyway, everyone have a great evening, got some studying to do. Toodles!
