Hello Monday (no doubt about it!)

"It's a new day and its going to be great," well maybe greater. So far so so, actually bad. Discovered that restricting carbs with Atkins doesn't work so well for me. Went AWOL today, carbs everywhere. Guess I'm calling it my indulgence day. ;-) But feels like a door got opened and an inner fiend got out!! Trying to think of it as a half-day - just that and nothing more - with plenty of abstinence potential in it. ;-)

So what happened? Could be just too much happening now. Was up late last night grading papers. Perhaps not the right time to be starting something new.

Could be that eliminating dairy and fruit entirely completely messes with my mind. ;-) Remember the year I gave up coffee for Lent, 40 days, 40 nights. Nearly killed me lol.

Now have the rest of the evening to recover from the sugar onslaught. First things first - off for a good nap. ;-)

Hope all my buddies have a nice evening. Peace:)

Ok, first let me tell you that what you experienced is not uncommon. Second, why are you giving up dairy? You can have hard cheeses on Atkins...just don't eat an 8 ounce block in a day. If you want some fruit, go for berries...they are low on GI scale. Your description of the feeling like a fiend got out...that's why I named it the Carb Monster...he is great friends with the scale gremlin. Remember that, for the first week especially, you are going to crave those carbs...keep some snacks you can have handy, drink a cup of full sodium broth in the morning and evening...that will help also. And be prepared for a bit of brain fog the first couple of days...your brain is busy converting itself to burning fat for energy rather than carbs. Once you get there it will be so much better! Hugs Maria!

And if you find the low carb eating of Atkins to be too restrictive with the elimination of fruit, take a peek at the Primal Blueprint...it is low carb but includes fruit. To check it out go to www.marksdailyapple.com It is Mark Sisson's blog and chock a block full of info!

I always had problems with Atkins, even after losing 30 lbs while on it. South Beach is much easier for me (though I'm doing a crappy job of following it right now.)

Stef, how true - not good to feed either of those two maniacal creatures. Ready to slay them!! Thanks for the info. Brain fog for sure. ;-) Jimmie: Appreciate your experience. Suspect I am inclined that way too. Lol, the "crappy" job. We WILL get to the end goal, then let's see how crappy the job was. ;-)

Don't know much about that diet or how it makes you feel. Sounds like Steph is the one to consult on that. I hope tomorrow is a better day for you.

Aawwww, girl, wish you would have given it a longer test. I still recommend buying the latest Atkins book and reading the science behind it. Fruit is allowed in Phase 2 and they actually recommends starting in Phase 2 if you are a vegan or have 15 lbs or less to lose. I started in Phase 1 because I wanted a head start. You will still lose in Phase 2, just slower. I want to say one more thing, and I'll get off my soapbox for the day. Sugar creates a cycle of wanting more and that is where those afternoon slumps come from, the lulls in your day. Like any dietary change, one has to give your body time to adapt. On a low carb diet, your body is learning to burn fat using fat. It can be incredibly healthy way of eating, but very important is research, research, research. Okay, I'm done. :-) Whatever you decide to do, good luck! And have an awesome Tuesday!
