Hermiones Mom's Journal, 10 June 2016

So I'm struggling a little because I know I'm going to have to make some additional adjustments in my diet because of the kidney stone situation. High protein diets contribute to kidney stones, and many of the foods I've been eating because of the FODMAP diet and to stay low-glycemic also contribute to kidney stones -- do you believe it? For example, because there are many fruits and veggies I can't eat because of FODMAPs, I eat a lot of grapefruit, spinach and kale, and to stay low-glycemic/moderately low-carb, I eat about 70% protein+fat/30% carbs, and mostly complex carbs. These strategies are keeping my IBS under control (well, most of the time) and promoting weight loss, but guess what? -- they also promote kidney stones.

The past couple of weeks, as the summer fruit comes in, I have been experimenting with adding back into my diet peaches, nectarines, avocado, asparagus, and even some apple. If I can tolerate these things, then I can bump up my veggie and fruit servings and lower my protein, without appreciably upping my carbs. I am so hopeful that this will prove to be true. The next phase would be to try out cauliflower. When I first started low-glycemic dieting, I ate a lot of cauliflower -- as puree and roasted. I also like roasted broccoli and brussels sprouts, but I don't dare eat these things now. I ate a serving of roasted broccoli about six months ago, and it almost killed me. But that was six months ago -- and now I've been on low-FODMAP for more than a year, and it's beginning to look as though if I avoid wheat and completely avoid lactose, I might be ok with everything else. Wouldn't that be fabulous?

It would be fabulous. Kidney stones must be awful. Is there a preventive action for them that can counterbalance your FODMAP food choices?

HCB -- I don't know yet. From what I am reading, the first things I am doing are 1) after I finish up the red grapefruit in the downstairs fridge, no more grapefruit except as a very occasional treat, since grapefruit is a big offender. 2) I am juicing limes like crazy and adding lime juice to everything, making low-sugar limeaid, putting it in iced tea, splashing it on fruit, adding it to smoothies. 3) I have been trying to eat more green beans, zucchini, and asparagus instead of spinach and kale, because again, spinach and kale are big offenders. 4) trying to leave room in my carbs for a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice every other day, as orange juice is supposed to retard formation of stones. 5) trying to emulate your water consumption, because apparently the more dilute your urine, the less change of stones. You don't have to stick to plain water: Iced green or mint tea (NOT black tea) is OK. Lemonade is the best thing, but even if I make it with only 1/2 tsp of sugar per 12 ounces, it will suck up my carbs for the day, so I'm pretty much sticking with unsweetened tea and water w/lime juice. I wish I could use Stevia, but unfortunately, I get a rash from it after a few days of use, so I don't think it's such a good idea, and it's the only sweetener besides sugar and maple syrup that is really FODMAP safe. This is pretty darn complicated and I'm concerned I'm going to get frustrated and use it as an excuse to just blow off the diet once of twice aw week just because I'm aggravated!
