A little lesson in insulin resistance.

I ate 2 eggs cooked in a small bit of butter this morning and had a few cups of plain coffee. I wanted to see how my blood sugar would react after 2 hours postprandial (without using metformin). Sadly, my blood sugar was 119 when it should've been under **100. This is what insulin resistance does. Sometimes it takes hours for my blood sugar to go down to under 120 after a meal, without medication.

Which means if by my next meal, if it's not down then my blood sugar will raise even higher through the day with every meal/snack or beverage I consume. Sux but thank goodness for metformin and this site!

**100 is my personal goal I want to be under. Normally, I should be in the 80's after a meal like that if I were healthy.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

I hear that loud and clear. My situation is a little different, in that I seem to be most insulin resistant in the morning until early afternoon. My glucose rises within two hours after I wake up, even if I don't eat! But if I do eat, I can count on it rising 50 points and hovering their until early afternoon. My fastng glucose readings have been between 68 and 85 in the morning, but by ten, they are up to 115-120, and if I eat, they go up to 140 or higher (and this is with me taking two meds plus insulin...). By late afternoon, I have to eat every two hours to keep in the 80s... Go figure.

Oh yeah PCJ. My blood also starts rising in the early morn and continues until I eat and take my metformin. In which case I can't have a lot of carbs in the morning. If I can't eat for some reason right away I take my metformin anyway to stop my blood sugar from going up until I can eat. For this reason I usually keep some boiled eggs in the frig to grab to eat with my meds. What a pain!

Wow hun - you sure are doing great. I am really surprised that you have lost so much being on Metforim. I have heard some very terrible things about it. My mom stopped taking hers and lost a considerable amount of weight almost overnight.

Sorry that that your mom had a bad experience Keli. Metformin is often the safest medication (comparatively speaking)and most often prescribed for insulin resistance - prediabetes and diabetes. I'm actually doing fine losing weight on it but YMMV comes to mind. But most complain of gas while on metformin which I can also attest to:(

I suppose that was a lesson well learned, Ruby. You have done really well losing weight in spite of all your health issues. You really do inspire me to carry on. It is fortunate that you are able to take Metformin with minimal bad side effects. If it helps to keep you stable, then good for you. Gassy is preferable to sick! HUGS!
