Added this picture after the second coat:

Wow! It's Wednesday already...it has been one week since I got home from the hospital from my bout of sepsis. I took it relatively easy last week although I spent Saturday night and Sunday morning babysitting 12 grandkids at one of my son's homes (four of my sons and spouses went out together to celebrate a birthday). The kids were great and not much trouble since they are ages 4-13. On my way home from my son's house I stopped at the local home improvement store and picked up supplies to refinish my wood floors.

As I've said before, I live in an old log cabin in the woods. I think this house was a log cabin kit built in the late seventies. Over the years there have been a number of additions and remodels - including ours. The floors in the original part of the house are quite worn. I wonder if they have ever been refinished. The house we owned before this one was what I call a "Grand Old Lady". That home was built in the 1880's and had beautiful hardwood floors throughout. We had those floors sanded and refinished and they were beautiful and "grand". The floors in this house are so different. They remind me of the projects people do where they whack the floors with chains and hammers to make them look more rustic...only these are the real thing. So I am not going the whole sand-and-refinish route. I spent the last two days sanding just enough to rough up what was left of the finish, and last night I applied a stain over the floors to make them a more uniform color. Today I will begin applying the finish...my plan is to do 4 coats.

I haven't eaten as well as I would normally because I don't have access to my kitchen. I had hoped to be more prepared for my eating plan with this project, but our handyman told us Friday he would not be coming this week and that gave me a one-week window of opportunity to get the floors done without extra feet walking back and forth. I've been eating PB&J's and cereal...so way more carbs than I'm used to.

No elliptical workouts this week. Hopefully I can get back to that next week. I usually judge the success of my workouts by the amount I sweat and how tired I am afterward (as well as the energy I get from it later). This week's "floor exercises" have produced the same amount of sweat, and I get really tired, but I don't feel the energy...lol...just the tired!

There is no way I could have done this work last year at this time. I marvel at how much more my body can do with my new healthstyle.

Already have two coats of poly on the floor. It is looking great! The prep took 3 days, but it is worth it. Putting down the poly is sooooo much easier than the sanding, vacuuming, staining, and tack cloth.

Wow! You must have had your handsful with so many grandkids! That sounds like you had an awesome time. :) Also, I am a little jealous of your log cabin (in a good way!) - I've always loved the look and feel of log cabins! I'm a sucker for older homes too, especially with historical value. They just don't make homes like they used to. The detail around the windows, the hardwood floors, the hardware, just everything is so magnificently crafted. I certainly hope you feel better soon!

Added a picture of the progress. I'm also doing the guest bathroom and two hallways - not included in the photo.
