What is this Bullet Proof Coffee you speak of and what is it supposed to do?
I keep seeing people post about how awesome it is and how it's tasty and satisfying but I have no idea what goes in it. It seems like it would be high calories.... Help and advice, please.

It's essentially coffee with added fats. You can find the history of it on the intertubes, which looks semi-shady to me. I'm pretty skeptical of people/companies selling things, rarely is it altruistic; they're in the market to sell things, to make money, etc.. Imagine how much they would sell if it was called 'Fat Coffee', too much of a stigma on the word fat these days. Take coffee, add fat. Simple. I've added either coconut oil or just straight butter. The type/kind of butter you use will make a difference in the taste. I use Kerry Gold butter in everything, I've tried other butters, but for me they just don't taste as good. IMHO Kerry Gold is better then the other as well, but that's a topic for a different thread. :) I haven't tried rendered pork fat or bacon grease yet. The change in taste though for "Fat Coffee" isn't to my liking, I'll usually take a spoon fun of coconut oil or a slice or two of butter and just eat it separately. Fat is more satiating then protein and fiber, so the coffee should in turn make you feel fuller longer.

I make my own version every morning. I love it!

we make our own version but using tea. I make my tea and add 1 tbsp. coconut oil an one tablespoon coconut milk. I've used almond milk and heavy whipping cream too. Its part of a low carb/high fat diet that teaches if you increase your fat intake and lower the carbs, your body will have no choice but to burn the fat. Its been working well for my husband and I. It helped me get over a tough plateau. It also helped my blood sugar significantly along with all the rest of my diet. I just saw it improve faster when I was strictly LCHF.

Bulletproof coffee works great for low carb high fat (LCHF)programs. The KEY is blend, blend, blend or it is not good. You take a large mug, add one tbsp coconut oil, and one tbsp of grassfed butter (Kerrygold is best - Trader Joe's or Whole Foods) and then our hot coffee or tea over it so it melts. Then, add whatever creamer or almond milk and sweetener if you like. Use an immersion hand mixer or throw it in a high intensity blender. It will froth up like a Latte. I drink mine in the morning and do not eat until 11:00am or 12:00pm most days. In fact, I drink my coffee and then to the gym for an intense workout. All the fat is burned off and gives great energy. If you are not doing LCHF - it may seem like too much fat.

It is high calories. What is your goal/history and advice can follow.

Coconut Oil (1 tbsp) 117 calories <> Butter (1 tbsp) 102 calories <> Milk/Creamer depends on qty (1 cup) 103 calories <> Sugar depends on qty (2.3g) 9 calories <> Black coffee depends on brewing style but generally is 5 calories a cup.

Wow y'all, this at least points me in the right direction. I was just curious as to what it is, and if i should be adding it to my morning routine. But, it maybe a little rich for me. :)

I don't use sugar to sweeten mine, I use splenda or stevia. Hubby likes his tea unsweetened but I can't swallow it without some sweetness. Yes its high calorie but since I don't go by my calories it doesn't affect my weight loss. Fat bombs are another treat I partake of daily. Tasty, quench my sweet tooth, but yes high in calories and fats. Fortunately it also works with my low carb high fat diet, and my blood sugars have gone from 200's to about 120's. My husband's has gone from 300-400 to 150's average. Our goal is number one control diabetes and blood sugars, and number two improve how we feel, and number three to lose weight. All three have been a huge success without stressing about calories or exercise. Should we exercise more? Sure, it would cause things to move faster and help tone muscle. But at this time we have no room for our own equipment, its too far to drive daily to our gym, its too rough of ground to efficiently walk, and we have a choice of going into town to the gym or preparing ourselves healthy food, we are choosing the food at the moment. Driving into town is a whole evening affair for us which means having to try to find quick inexpensive food that fits in our diet plan. We will get there!

@HCB - Ahhhh.. I've got an immersion blender but I haven't heard of whipping/mixing it.... Very interesting, especially if it froths up.. I just didn't care for the oil floating on the top of the coffee... I *WILL* have to try it blended.

I drink it a couple times a day. I'm on Atkins 20. Since it's a low carb / high fat diet I don't always get enough fat in for the day. I don't put butter in mine though. I use 2 TB coconut oil, 2 TB Sugar Free coffee syrup, and 1 TB artificial sweetener. Put it all in the blender or a food processor otherwise the coconut oil will just keep floating to the top. If blended it just looks like a cappuccino =)

I have had coffee with 1 tsp coconut oil in it to add that beneficial fat and up my calories. I don't mind the fat floating - just give it a stir before I drink. It's interesting that it will foam up if you blend it. I wonder though, isn't that creating an emulsified fat that isn't healthy to consume? Whipped fats become transfats.

Coffee is bad for you. That's why I have mine with 4 shots of espresso. :D I blend it with a tbsp of coconut oil or butter, and 30 grams of protein shake mix. Make sure you blend it. It will burn your lips if you don't.
