blurose411's Journal, 22 February 2015

I had something strange happen yesterday while I was getting a workout in and I thought maybe you guys could help me figure out what happened. I was doing a beginners zumba workout and about 15 minutes in I started to feel strange. My voice sounded to me to be far away or like my ears were clogged but my son's voice sounded fine. When I tried to talk my words came out wrong. My thoughts were fine and clear but I couldn't make my mouth cooperate. I was saying the wrong things and taking long pauses trying to form the words. My son said I sounded drunk. Then my hands acting funny. They felt fine to me but everything I touched felt cold and it felt like a cold breeze was flowing around them. My son said they felt clammy. The "symptoms" came on in that order and left in that order. It took about an hour to get back to normal with the clammy hands taking the longest to return to normal. I felt fine otherwise and have never experienced any thing like this before. Anybody else ever go through something similar or have any idea what happened?

I'd get checked, That sounds like either a mini-stroke or some heart issues. Check your heart enzymes and talk to your dr about a head CT scan.

I may have had some similar things like the feeling of standing beside myself and my hands felt too weak to grab things, also shaky and probably clammy. I was told it could be anxiety. Not sure if this is similar to your experience? Also weak legs, like they were too weak to carry me but I could walk fine it just felt like i couldn't.

Yea, that's what I thought you'd say. Unfortunately, unless I'm in dire straights going to the md isn't possible for me. I'm uninsured and can't get insurance so I'll just have to keep an eye out. Thanks for the concern though.

Believe me that I do not want to scare you, just make you aware that you might have a serious medical issue. The problem is that most of those symptoms can be associated with a drop in blood pressure - but the inability to articulate words and words coming out wrong shows that there was something happening in your brain. Either an aneurysm type event or severe oxygen deprivation that happens when the heart has issues.

Njashka, I did have that feeling of disconnect at first. As a matter of fact, when it started I thought I'd "hit the runners stride" because I had been struggling to keep up then all of the sudden it was such a struggle anymore.

Dayberndt, those were some of my concerns also. My breathing was very hard (I'm very out of shape). And I know I should see a md, but really just can't. Hopefully we will get this insurance thing straightened out soon but until then I'm on the poor man's insurance - a prayer.

Do you have any of those "poor people's clinics" in your area? In Oklahoma there are some, you can't make an appointment and they are all first come first serve basis and within the means of someone with low income. Also a lot of the universitary campuses medical centers have financial aid. You might want to look into that. Are you taking any medication?

Se, the "sounded drunk" part made my alert lights come up and say "stroke" right away. That is exactly one of the symptoms. Can you check both sides of your face, look in the mirror if you have any drooping and if your tongue tilts to one side if you pull it out.

I just checked in the mirror, like you suggested, my face and tongue are fine and normal. There are some clinic not to far away but I've dealt with these kinds of clinics before. They don't have the ability most of the time to run these kinds of test and since I'm fine now they would probably send me home with nothing more than advice to go to the emergency room if it happens again or gets worse. I don't sweat like normal so it may have been a mini heat stroke. I've had those a few times in the past even to the point of fainting. I'll keep an eye on how hot I get when I work out. I didn't think I was too hot, but that makes the most sense now that I've thought about it because of my history.

There are a number of things that cause those symptoms, all of them should be checked by a doctor.

No doubt; I was just hoping someone could say "Oh, yea I've been through that and this is what it was for me." I knew it was a long shot, and I know I should see a md but it is what it is. Thanks everyone for your concern and time in responding to me. Happy journey!

I looked at your profile and I saw you just started. You probably made the common mistake most people who are trying to lose weight do: try too high of a workout right from the start. It is way too much and it can cause severe heart and blood pressure events. Zumba is definitely too high a workout for beginning. I understand the desire to lose weight fast, but you must do it in a safe way. I'd suggest you to go on youtube and look for "pilates for beginners". It will strenghten your core and allow you to get into a workout routine. When you get into advanced pilates for a week without problems then and only then switch to Zumba, but not a high workout at once.

Complete agree with Dayberndt.

Yea, zumba was too much to quickly I will admit. It said it for beginners so I thought it would be closer to my level but their idea of beginner is not the same as my idea of beginner. I've been doing some yoga for beginners and some walking but also trying to get in some cardio. I'm usually good about taking a break when I need to; this time it just seemed to sneak up on me.

Another thing: I looked at your food calendar. You are eating things that are not allowed on Atkins induction: cured bacon, flax seed, tortillas, string beans, peanut butter, avocados (yes, even avocados shouldn't be used in induction), store bought mayo (it contains sugar) and way too much cheese. Most importantly SUGAR!!! And you are pretty constantly over the max allowed of 20 netcarbs. You are never going to get in induction this way and you are just torturing yourself and end up putting on more weight. I know it's hard, for myself it's probably even harder due to the fact that my regular diet is pretty much raw vegetarian with some eggs and cheese and fish thrown in from time to time. Advice no. 1: get rid of the sugar. Buy Stevia in the Raw powder. VERY IMPORTANT. Advice no. 2: check the Atkins allowed foods in induction list. You are way far from it. Advice no. 3: do not forget the liquid - coffee and soda don't count, they're diuretics. Make a big (2L) pitcher of green tea or wild berries tea in the morning (don't even boil the water, fill the pitcher, put in the teabags and let sit for half an hour) UNSWEETENED and drink all of it throughout the day. Do it properly, and in the first couple of days whenever you're hungry in between meals cut a slice of butter or two and eat them. It will stop the cravings.I promise you, once you get in ketosis you will not feel hungry at all and you will be barely able to eat the whole RDI amount of calories you should. Make your own mayo, don't buy the one in the grocery stores. It's very easy to make, all you need is eggs, mustard, some lemon juice and vegetable oil (dont' use extra virgin olive oil because it will be bitter). I promise you, it's not more expensive. I live on disability and SSI and just hunt the deals in my neighborhood - last time I found chicken thighs at Aldi's for 89 cents a lb and got me about 10 lbs of it - 3 trays. I used one tray in the crockpot, with just some salt and garlic powder and it's delicious, you can have that with some lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower salad. Feel free to check my food calendar for ideas.

Forgot to say: the more carbs (and especially carbs from sugar and the other foods not allowed in induction) over the allowed amount you will eat the more cravings you will have and the more you will go over the allowed amount - it's a vicious circle. I feel for you very much, we are fairly similar, and aiming for a close goal. I have on top chronic pain and some medical conditions that don't allow me to do certain exercises. But, make sure you do record ALL activities you have - even sleeping or browsing the internet. The body has to use calories just for existing, so you WILL end up burning more than you eat once you enter ketosis.

Dayberndt, I appreciate that you took the time to look at my diet and the advice you have given. I will look at your food calendar because I am running out of ideas. I will be frank with you as to your critics. The carbs shown on fs are not very accurate as I've just been putting in the first thing that pops up with my search. I have been keeping a more accurate accounting on the atkins site and have made sure to stay in the 20 - 25 net carb range that site suggested (except for last night). Also, I have cut out the sugar, where you are seeing that is from the first 2 days on this sight but I didn't begin the atkins diet until the third day. The first couple of days I used mainly to see where I was at. Except of course the cupcake I had last night. After 4 days of fighting I did give in to 1 treat, I will not feel shame or guilt for this. When I feel shame or guilt over what I eat I tend to eat more. For me it is better to accept that I will not stay on the straight and narrow at all times, but to simply keep moving at a steady pace. As to the tortillas (btw they are carbsmart with 3 net carbs), peanut butter, and avocados those are all things I pulled from the atkins sight while searching under induction so if there is a confusion it is with their sight. I probably am over doing it on the cheese and will adjust for that. As to the flax seed and green beans, I don't recall where I got those from but even with them I have stayed in the net carb range atkins recommended. From what I understand the atkins 40 is much more inclusive of different foods and allows for a bit higher net carb right from the start. That is why the site suggested I start there and not with the atkins 20. If I get bored I will fail. I know you are trying to help and I appreciate that. All of this can be confusing and over whelming, so guidance is always needed.

Definatly get checked when you can. My dad had mini strokes, a big one finally killed him--they are not something to treat lightly.

Stroke or heart attack or anxiety. This does not sound good. Please seek medical help. If you have no health insurance you can get treatment and pay $50 a month until you pay off the debt. Maybe your government has help for you if your income is low.
