QUESTION: Has anyone gotten great results WITHOUT having to get a personal trainer? I have been wondering if I should get one, but I am on a budget and don't wanna pay a lot of money to hire one.....

@jparlett...I was afraid someone would say that! lol I am so swamped at home and work, and I just feel like I don't have the time to try and come up with a program....Maybe I need to research on bodybuilding.com

Honestly I think trainers are a sham. It you are that swamped at home and work, when are you going to exercise, with or without a trainer? They are really motivational more than anything. Of course they can correct technique and such, but you also said you don't have money to burn. I'd spend that on equipment for you to use in your home rather than pay it to a guy to say "Okay. Give me 4 more!!!"

LOL @ eddie1261...OK...I just have to make the committment to weight train. I have been making time to run every other day...so I need to get my mind right and get this weight training program started! THX for the advice

Find a buddy to do it with. The accountability of setting the time aside and getting there is a little easier to do when you know there is someone waiting on you to show up.

I see many trainers hyping their classes and products. I see the same classes filled with people doing exercises they are not ready to do. I see a lot of poor form instead of exercise modifications. Find some time. Do some reading. Practice good form on whatever you do. You have to live with the tendons and joints in your body the rest of you life. :) Start walking. Progress to walking briskly enough to make breathing noticeable and deliberate. Walk with good form in good shoes. :)

Nope. Work your abs every day. It only takes a few minutes. Everything else will follow. Sore abs will remind you of what's up...

I like 12 Minute Athlete! http://www.12minuteathlete.com/ Some of the exercises use different pieces of equipment (jump rope, dumbbells, etc.) but if you don't have the equipment the trainer gives you alternative exercises. For example, not everyone has a pylo box for box jumps, so the alternative exercise is trucker jumps or high-knees. And the workouts are FREE! There is an option to buy additional information/training tips from the woman that runs the site, but it's not mandatory.

its only 30min a day and each day of the week workout is picked for you. It does more then you think it will! I was super shocked that it was that effective! Try it and let me know!

I just saw an infomercial on the 21 day fix at 5am this morning. I was thinking of trying it as well.

In addition to what everyone else is saying, you should try workout DVD's or online workouts that focus on weightraining/toning. It's like having a personal trainer, but less money and you can stay home. I have had success with Jillian Micheal's 30 Day Shred and I am about to start insanity.

Yes I have... I had exercise daily till my right knee said enough is enough... have not been exercising at all ( I should be)-- still losing weight... 373.4 in April 3 2014 to 295 today

You don't need a trainer to get results. Educate yourself about your goals and never depend on only one source, read, read, read.

I'd pick five basic exercises like squats or leg presses, bench press, military press, pull downs to chest, and something like a bench row. I really have a preference for dumbbells wherever I can use them because I'm old enough the shoulders give me grief. I'd hire a personal trainer for two or three session simply to check your form. Proper form is essential. Never sacrifice form to lift more weight. That approach will bit you every time. If they're not willing to work with you for those exercises only, look for a different trainer. Take your time. Doing too much too fast is counterproductive.

I second what NM said. I'm currently studying to be a personal trainer, and have learned a lot of really important information about how to NOT get injured. My advice is to shop around for a GOOD trainer, ask them if they conduct functional fitness & mobility screens/assessments and ask for them to conduct an evaluation on you to assess your strengths/weaknesses and what muscle groups you need to work on BEFORE you start really working out at a higher intensity. Then have have them walk you through a few workouts until you feel comfortable to do it on your own. It may cost you some money upfront for the trainer, but preventing a knee replacement surgery, or some time on the sidelines from a serious muscle injury will definitely be cheaper (and wiser) in the long run.

I went from ~160 down to 120 without a trainer. I worked out at home and bicycled. Sadly I'm back up to 140 :/ But yeah, you don't need a trainer - you have the internet. If you want to start lifting weights you can research proper form, take a video of yourself and upload to certain websites where they'll critique your form and help you adjust. Really, a trainer is for rich people who really need one lol.
