Everything I have read about this diet makes me think it's really the best way to lose weight and to continue as a way of life. I hope you have the full support of your doctor!

My MD put me on the diet and my Naturopath was shocked and upset. Well a year later and down 65 pounds made a believer out of her. Hope your doctor is open minded and educated about Atkins. Many doctors don't spend the time to keep up with this kind of information. Taking the book is a good idea. Right in the foreword it suggests sharing the info with your health care professional. Good luck.

Back from my primary care dr. and disappointed that I don't have her support of the Atkins diet. (but another one of my specialist is all for it). Her only concern was that she worries about too much fat causing high cholesterol. Although while doing Atkins, I no longer medically need to take metformin for Type II Diabetes; blood test 2x day @ 80-90, my blood pressure went from 130/80, to 102/65 (the last two dr visits since on Atkins), and all of my blood work came back normal for the first time since 2008. My dr wanted me to have gastric bypass for the past 2 yrs. I do not have family support to do that, and since doing Atkins I no longer want to do the gastric bypass. Thx for your comments.

Moondove, there are so many doctors out there that do not understand that there is difference between good and bad fat. Stick with what the specialist says...if your blood work looks great for the first time since 2008, then I would venture to say that it is working for you....if necessary find a doctor that understands the way Atkins works to fight cholesterol. I suspect that you have probably tried lots of low fat diets in your life, and even when eating low fat, your numbers were high? I would stick up for your lifestyle, and when the doc sees that the numbers are continuining to go down, perhaps she will change her mind. If she doesn't find a doctor with a more open mind. Congrats on your wonderful results and your weight loss...I think you are doing awesome!

I was just wondering, since I'm assuming you had talked to the doctor about Atkins prior to the blood work being done - after seeing the numbers what did the doctor have to say?

ctlss: how did you know I have been doing low fat forever? LOL! I am continuing on w/Atkins. Most days I have been great. If I have had side effects such as a headache, it is because I have forgotten to eat on time, or drink water when I should. Once I do that and keep on track, I feel wonderful. I am more active than I have been in years. Actually... I now think, 'I'm going to go for a walk', instead of 'Uggghhh I really don't want to go for a walk, do I have to?' Hee! Hee!

kfouty: I actually had blood work done prior to starting Atkins, which had some flags; high sugar (130), high bad cholesterol (I think it was 116), low sodium, then 2x while on Atkins (once w/primary dr, once w/specialist). All of my tests were normal range w/no flags. My primary dr said I am doing great at loosing weight and did positively comment on my blood labs. She followed up by saying that in her opinion the Atkins diet causes high cholesterol and that was her concern. I am with Sutter Gould Medical Foundation in CA Central Valley; they are very PRO Gastric Bypass ~ 100%
