7/7/14 Challenge miles --- Week 2, Day 1: 5 mile run.

****

So the plan was to swim as well. I was so excited about our new aquatic center. I practically ran out of my office after work to get there. Paid the admission and walked into something that was more akin to a splash park. While I had been told on their website that there were lap lanes, the *lap lanes* were only 10 foot long with a horizontal rope separating them from a diving area that was being put to use by a long line of children. Essentially, there was no lap lane, nor is there ever per management. SO, I went home. Guess I will be putting in my water mileage by swimming the cove at our local lake. Eh, at least it is free.

I thought about running this evening as well. I feel like I could with no problem. But, I have to take a college entrance exam in the morning so that I can enroll in the local community college for classes. I have not been in college in thirteen years. I have not used algebra for at least the past seventeen years. Thus, I am thinking I will spend the evening re-teaching myself math so that I don't fail to meet the minimum requirements and be forced into remedial college classes. I had kinda hoped they would just figure that since I am post-doctorate degree I could wing a few undergrad science classes without having to take remedial courses. They asked about my ACT score. The one from 1992. Haha. Rather than try to fish an official transcript out of archives, I'm taking the free Compass test. I'm nervous. Even if I pass it, but don't do outstanding, that score is probably going to be passed along to whatever Med School I apply. So, if any of you want to route me to an algebra/trig/calculus tutorial website, I am open to suggestions!

Going good on the food front so far tonight. I'm still waiting on my pulled pork to finish off in the crock pot. The sooner it finishes the better because I am starting to get some major hunger pains.

I hear you on the "kid-oriented" splash park. I had to look long and hard to find an aquatic center that had more than just the one hour of lap swim. It's a bit out of the way for me, but it is worth it. Good luck on your compass test. When I had to test out of a math class in order to take Chemistry (despite having done through Trigonometry at the college level years ago), I used my old College Algebra book to practice. I put in maybe 3 hours, did a bunch of problem tests, and eventually took the test. I didn't quite test directly into College Algebra, but close enough. You'll do fine.

The cove or the lake sound a much more pleasant swim than a kiddy friendly pool, in fact I'm quite envious. Good luck with your test, have fingers crossed for you. :)

Ahh.. back to college.. brings up the thoughts of crisp fall evenings, the smell of fresh textbooks, and beer... lots and lots of beer... wait...

Bella, that sounds like Law School. I doubt they will let me drink my way through medical school. Haha.

Seriously? So you're doing this ... why??? LOL, JK. I'm very proud of you. Math, sobriety and all. :-)

Yes, Ma'am. My math scores today sucked. But, I believe they will also use my ACT from 1992. Wahoo! I have to pick up a few pre-reqs for the med school requirements and being the cheap person I am, I figured I'd nab those from the local community college before I have to find a way to shell out $25,000+ per year for a state medical school. I've been a lawyer for about 12 years now and it is just not fulfilling or challenging to me any longer. I think taking care of my husband following his heart attack and then my son following his open abdominal wound re-invigorated my desire to go to medical school. And, completing the marathon set me in the mind-frame that while I may take my sweet time finishing, I can be pretty determined to reach a goal.

www.number2.com has pretty decent free ACT math review, which should also be relevant to the Compass test. I also think Harvey Mudd College's review materials for students who aren't as ready for calculus as they'd like to be are good. https://www.math.hmc.edu/calculus/tutorials/

Shoot, I just saw that you already took the test! Perhaps the math resources might be useful to you if you need to fill in gaps as you get back to school, though.

So excited that you're going to do it :). Very happy for you!! I don't know any good sites but before I took my placement tests I went to the library and checked out a few study books for ACT and practiced like a crazy woman. You're going to do great. So motivated by you as your such a successful woman in every way, when I grow up I want to be just like you... seriously :)

Notlivingonramen- thank you for the site. I will definitely use it for a refresher even if I don't have to take any additional math courses. Yolanda- you're too kind. Wish I had decided to do this when I was your age rather than waiting until I was 40. But as long as I'm still alive and kicking, I'm of the opinion it is never too late.

Most definitely never too late! A strong woman who follows her dreams, quite the role model!!

Hi 2MC, HUGE CONGRATS on continuing your education, hope all gets smoothed out soon. Too bad about the pool disappointment. It's sad that the "aquatic park" is much more focused on kids' fun than on health & fitness features that would benefit everyone. At least you have an alternate place to swim. Your crockpot pulled pork sounds so yummy, I hope it turns out tasting as good as it sounds to me. My daughter made us some delicious crock pot pulled pork with green chilies & kidney beans last night. A neat coincidence, hee hee.
