Kathy Vanish's Journal, 27 June 2014

This week was long and hard. It started out well, but on Tuesday I had dinner before zumba and ended up in the bathroom more than in the class and didn't stay for the toning section (embarrassing, but an important lesson learned - Don't eat a big meal before exercise class). Well, at least I thought it was that, but my stomach was still bothering me the next day and I was so exhausted from the traveling and stress of the week that I ended up binging up to 1500 calories Wednesday night and 1800 last night. I have absolutely no self control when I am exhausted (fell asleep before my daughter last night)

I got a great night's sleep and was able to get up to run this morning. It was a wonderful run, cool, sunny, and very relaxing (I know I find relaxation in a hard sweaty workout - I am unusual), but you gotta love me.

I am so looking forward to today and this weekend. I am finally caught up at work and don't have to worry about it until I travel on Monday. Today I am going to clean my house, put my laundry away, and then this afternoon my husband and I are going to take a cruise in our corvette with the T-tops off to pick up passes to ride our ATV's in the Allegheny national forest on Sunday. Since it has been raining it will be water, mud, fresh air, and a whole lot of fun. On Saturday, we are talking about taking the boat out in the afternoon and then come home and watch the nascar race Saturday night. I so need a weekend like this.

On Monday it's back to work. I have to travel Monday - Wednesday, teach all day on Thursday and then run my next 5K Thursday night and then go out on the river (if the weather nice - cross your fingers) and watch the fire works. Friday it's sleep in and take the day off hopefully. Since I don't have to travel the following Monday or Tuesday I might not have to work the 4th it depends on how many reports need written to stay on top of things. It's how it is when you own your own business.

My low fat diet is going well, but like I said, I blew it two days in the row, but with a good night sleep I feel in control again. Today I am going to do a veggie day and flush any of the rest of the bad stuff out of my system and get my tummy the rest of the way to normal. I did really well eating out on the road last week and am proud of myself. My failure came at night when exhaustion kicked in.

On Monday and Tuesday my only restaurant choice is McDonalds. I am taking some grapes, carrots, and an apple so I won't need any fries. Have any of you tried their salads? Any suggestions would be nice? I will probably stick with a strawberry/banana smooties for a drink, but since this will be my only real meal for the day I will need something. If nothing else, I can always get a chicken sandwich. Advice anyone?

No, never good to have a big meal before exercise. Exercise can cause changes in our constitution, lol~ (speeds things up).

When I'm tired I start reaching for sweets to help keep me awake, when what I really need to do is just go to bed if I can. Good luck at that 5K next week! We definitely will motivate each other since mine's on Friday. You're going to rock it! As for your McDonald's, go online and check out their calorie counts before you hit the road. If you get a salad with grilled chicken and don't use too much dressing it shouldn't be too bad. I haven't had a salad from there in years, so I couldn't tell you if they're good or bad. The fruit and yogurt parfait has 150 calories and it's decent. If you're getting food and the smoothie I'd definitely check out the counts because your smoothie will be at least 200 calories, so then water would probably be a better option for a drink, but if the smoothie is the "meal" then you'll be okay. Just beware, the smoothie for the meal is loaded with carbs and not much protein, but a salad with chicken has more protein and less carbs, it just depends on which fills you up and keeps you full longer. Eating well on the road is hard, so it's good that you are getting prepared ahead of time. Have a great weekend!

Great advice above. That's a tough nut to crack when McDonalds is the only option. Just do your best. Sounds as if you have fun times ahead! Enjoy!

HI Kathy, you're probably travelling by now! Have a great 5k! I used to eat McDonalds salad - I always go for the grilled chicken and eat it all, however i do not take the salad dressing and croutons, I simply refuse to have them on the tray, I ask for pepper and salt only. I find its a nice portion and there's a good balance of chicken and salad and it fills me up...and it's always fresh. I drink black coffee with it or water. After that, i check if i can move on, if not i see if it's worth queuing up again for the yogurt with the berry topping. I think McDonalds serve some great options, it just a matter of choice...do not study the menu too hard because everything will sound yummy. I've also had the breakfast muffin lately...it is surprisingly filling even though small. My number 1 choice is still the grilled chicken salad.
