mars2kids's Journal, 25 February 2014

I got a call from the doc yesterday that my test on Friday was good except that it showed I have reflux. Weird I guess because I don't have any symptoms of reflux except for the side pain. She told me not to take my joint meds and to start prilosec this week and then see her next week. So, I'm going do what I can to help the reflux and if that takes away my pain then I'll be happy.

I'm going to try to look up some good foods to help with reflux, which seems like it could be a really bland, boring diet, but if it's going to take the pain away then I'll try anything. I'm not off to the best start today with my coffee, but tomorrow I'll do no coffee, we'll see if I make it.

I got a workout in yesterday, the first in a while. It actually felt really good to get it done. My side was hurting during the workout, but nothing I couldn't handle. Today on my lunch break I'm going to go look for a new DVD to get me motivated to get a workout done this evening. I feel like things are looking up!

Happy Tuesday!

Glad to hear the good news! At least now you have things you can try instead of not knowing whats going on.

I am glad you got good news! Take the workouts easy until you can get your pain under control. I hope things keep looking up!

I have silent symptoms reflux too. My doc took everything away because he did not know my "triggers". Here is my list: no caffeine, no alcohol :-(, no choc, no tomato (including red sauce, ketchup, BBQ sauce), no citrus (which includes citric acid (used as a preservative- found in a lot of frozen foods and drinks), no high in fat foods, no big meals, no onion (including onion powder – it is in most packaged seasonings, gravies, salad dressing, broth, canned soup, bullion & flavor bases like chicken base, or beef base) - watch out when a product lists spices on the label, because 95% of the time that means it includes onion powder),no spicy food (I now find ketchup to be spicy), no dark soda (but soda also has citric acid so I don't know why it is not just no soda at all). Also, no eating food and have minimal drinks 3 hours before bed or lying down. I try to eat dinner by 6 every day. Only Subway and Uno's has a meal we can eat that fits our food restrictions. I try to be good but it is soooooo hard to cook from scratch EVERY night, & I love to cook! Sometimes you just want easy. It is a very bland diet. When I am being good, I follow it 90%. Sometimes, I just want to buy a salad dressing, and not have vinegar or make one from scratch. It also makes it very hard to count calories. I take a Rx antacid every day. It does help. I don't get your pain; I get a esophageal spasm that makes me unable to swallow, even liquid. But since I have been on the Rx (4 yrs) – I have not had any spasms. Take care of yourself. You are in my thoughts.

Thanks all!! Jessa, I go to the doc on Monday, and she'll probably send me to my gastro doc for specific diet info, but I'm afraid of such a bland diet. Everything I eat has flavor. I think I could give up soda if it helps me and I already do no caffeine, no alcohol, so those are easier ones. The diet aspect is what scares me the most I guess.

I admit my food is heavy on the garlic. Only flavor left!

Soda and carbonated beverages ( even water)used to cause me reflux so I seldom drink anything carbonated. Love my plain water!

Coffee and some artificial sweetners seem to affect my reflux the most. I always get heartburn after drinking diet 7-up. Good luck!

Have you tried apple cider vinegar? Sounds counter intuitive, but it is supposed to be very good for reflux, stomach acid, et al. Google it - there's a lot of reading to be had on its benefits. :0)
