Raych's Journal, 20 January 2009

Today has been a challenge. I'm exhausted. I was up at 1am until 7am. Then slept till 8am. So I probably only got about 2-3 hours of sleep. And to top it off, my plumbing is backed up. I mean BACKED UP! In those early morning hours, I was trying everything. Laxatives, coffee (yuck), guzzling water. I've been taking 18 fiber capsules a day since Saturday. No help whatsoever. I drink more than the required amount of water each day. I eat my veggies. What is my problem? So this afternoon, I went and bought sea salt to do the salt flush. This should only take about 1-4 hours according to various websites. I drank it down by 330pm today. It is now 1203am and it still hasn't finished. That's how bad it is. The salt water has been trapped in my body all day, and I have felt awful. It's no wonder I'm not losing weight according to the scales. Everything I eat is staying in my body. I am going to have to do the salt flush for the next two days. I'm also going to make a doctor's appt to make sure it isn't anything else as I have some other symptoms. I couldn't even eat anything until about 8pm. And it wasn't much. And I did cheat according to my standards. I had some sugar free candy and sugar free cupcakes. They contain sugar alcohols that could possibly slow down weighloss. But if I was going to cheat, I figured at least it wouldn't be as bad as french fries or cheesecake. So, I'm ditching my scales until I get this under control. I took my first measurements on January 14. I decided to see if there were any changes tonight. I've lost 1/4 inch from my arms and thighs. Don't know if that's a great loss for 6 days, but I'm happy with it since the scales don't show it. I checked my stomach just for laughs, and I actually increased 2 inches. No surprise with my current problem. So if anyone has any suggestions or advice, please feel free. I'm feeling a bit tortured right now! :(

Oh goodness... sorry to hear that! See your doctor first, BUT if everything is ok... I can suggest you some tea that will make you go! Watch out for those sugar free things, as they can cause your stomach to hurt, you don't always "go" b/c of them... sometimes, you just get the aches! I'm sure you'll see results when you get this taken care of!

Aww i am sorry to hear the trouble you are going through. I kow how stressful it can be. Just be careful on what you take. And going to the doctor might not be such a bad idea! Hope it gets better!

I think that Miralax works quite well. It works by getting more water into the stool rather than stimulating the intestines. That means it works without causing cramps or diarrhea. It was recommended to me by a gastroenterologist. Ask your doctor about it. I often have issues with being backed up and I take two magnesium citrate tablets at bedtime and this really helps keep things moving. I save the Miralax for times I need something a bit stronger. I also try and make sure that I get enough fiber every day. You may want to switch to a fiber supplement that you mix with water so that you are certain to get enough liquid with the supplement. On the plus side when you get "going" again you will probably have an impressive weight loss! LOL

Oh, I hope you feel better soon! I only suggest tea. Green tea helps your system to go. In particular, there is a tea out there called ballerina tea that really assists in elimination. I hope your doctor gives you something! I must tell you, other than being backed up. The measurement thing is awesome. I have always been too ashamed to measure my body, good for you! And you saw a difference. Great job and feel better!

Thanks everyone. I did another sea salt flush today. And it actually worked like it was supposed to. I hope to be back on path, but I'm feeling so tired. I will definitely get my challenges done today since I didn't do them yesterday. Double the work for me, so I'd better get started. I'll have to get that tea tonight. Don't want to go through this again!

Oh, that really sucks. Some people go through this when they first start Atkins. You have to find something that works for your body. Are you eating veggies with high fiber (like green leafy veggies)? My mother takes a couple spoonfuls of ground psyllum husks in water each morning. It works for her. Another friend of mine has found that she has to have a salad every day to keep herself moving. These first few weeks can be rough - you are really learning how your body works and what it needs. Don't worry too much about the sugar free candies - I eat them every once in awhile, too!!! But they can give you lots of air!!! :) So if you are already bloated, it might not be a great choice for a snack!! I bet you will lose 10lbs tomorrow!!! ha!

You might want to also start a good quality probiotic. The more info I get on this the more important it seems to be. Ask for a recommendtion at your local health food store as to which one to try. It appears that good health begins in the gut and that it has a major impact on immunity and a host of other things. Glad to hear that you are doing better!

If you overdo it on fiber it can actually have the opposite effect. I second the probiotic suggestion. It sometimes takes a few weeks for your body to adjust to the new way of eating. Sometimes just some s/f candy will do it for me because of the sugar alcohols. I don't really have that problem any more, though I did when I first started. It gets better. I'm glad you are feeling better. Just keep hydrated.
