Mary in LA's Journal, 29 August 2013

Hello, my name is Mary, and I'm a yogurt-o-holic. :)

After cutting drastically back on my dairy products for the last couple of months, I knocked back more than a pint of "drinkable yogurt" (a.k.a. kefir). Dang, I've missed that stuff!

For years I kept my fridge continually stocked with all possible flavors of yogurt and kefir. Then I started getting "virtuous" and buying plain yogurt and mixing jam or maple syrup into it. (In hindsight, I was probably getting more sugar that way, so it wasn't very virtuous after all, was it?) :)

"I swear, it was the probiotics wot dun it!" Er, no, I don't. It was all me. I had just been reading a very interesting article about the gut/brain connection, and that set my mind working, so that I bought a bottle of probiotic capsules at my local drugstore -- but that kefir was already in the fridge, thanks to my DH, who also loves the stuff. (He's slightly lactose-intolerant, but since the wee probiotic beasties eat most of the lactose, he handles fermented dairy just fine.)

So the acid(ophilus) test is: Can I consume yogurt and kefir in moderation, or will they always be wild binge triggers for me? We shall see!

Hi Mary! I used to consider my yogurt a reason for life but not so much anymore .. can't remember the last time I had any. I'd tried to go as pure as I could and that was the Fage *around here anyway* but when I realized that 6oz tub was ringing up at $3 a shot I decided unlike Loreal *it* wasn't worth it. The kefir is pretty good though I'll admit. I think I still get enough dairy in eggs and of course cheese. A day without cheese is just not one worth getting out of bed for.

Hi, Bella! You're right about Fage -- I think they must put gold dust in it. :) And I'm right there with you about cheese. I wouldn't have ordered those darn "carb-bomb" mashed potatoes at Denny's yesterday if not for the yummy smoked Cheddar cheese. Mmm... cheese...

Hi, I make my own kefir milk. I looked at the store kefir and the the carbs are HUGE. No way. I make smoothies with fruit and splenda and really like it. I drink 8oz. a day and wow do i feel better the days I drink the milk.

Hi, MMN! I'd love to make my own kefir and yogurt. Would you believe I have not one, but two electric yogurt makers sitting idle because I haven't made the time to learn to use them? Maybe I'll break them out this weekend. My local Whole Paycheck, ahem, Whole Foods has yogurt starter and all kinds of lactobacilli, or maybe I could use a shot of Yakult as a starter. Thanks for the nudge! :)

Or I suppose I could break open one of my new probiotic capsules and see how that works as a yogurt starter...
