KathyTriesAgain's Journal, 13 August 2013

I feel a little sad right now. I told my husband that I am down 6 pounds. He said congratulations this morning. He is the one that makes the evening healthy meals for us most of the time. Well when I got home he told me everyone had eaten and I looked and he had bought pizza. He did not heat up the left over chicken I had made or cooked any greens. I read in this book that was given me by my weight management counselor that said that be careful of the people that try to sabotage what you are doing. I sat back and thought of the many time I tried to diet and eat healthier and start losing weight and then my husband would bring home KFC chicken, mash potatoes, macaroni and cheese and biscuits. Well I AM grateful and thankful that now I am on a program that gave me something to cope with this type of situation. I did not eat pizza to night. Now that he is out of the house I am heating up some frozen spinach and the organic chicken I had left over in the fridge. No one can stop me now.

Kathy - based on this one experience, or even on past experiences - it's possible your husband is not doing this to 'sabotage' your efforts. While it would be great if everyone around us had the same 'focus' we do - the truth is, they...are not 'eating' a new way. There's no real change to their lifestyles. Unless you want to start being the chief cook - and then you get to make the choices. (at least that's how it works around here.) Just be sure to let him know 'Pizza' isn't something you choose to eat right now. You may eat it down the road in the future, but considering you just worked so hard to be down 6lbs... it would be a 'wrinkle' in your program you don't need right now. If he's going to choose pizza or KFC, could he please let you know ahead...so you can plan to make something for yourself? Sometimes I make a big salad...take two pieces of pizza... scrape the toppings and cheese off onto my salad, ditch the crust into the trash - and voila! I eat what they eat...how I want... and it happens so infrequently, that it generally doesn't hurt my plans. (pizza sauce can be high in sugar, so not recommended til you are at your maintenance levels.) Glad you went w/ the chicken and spinach! Good Job!!

I agree, Kathy. My husband doesn't need to lose weight, and he, like me, loves to eat snacks, etc. He is, however, my biggest fan. So while I know I cannot expect him to avoid some of the foods I need to avoid, and while he will put them in my shopping cart or want to know if I would like some of the snack he decides to eat, he will often tell me he is proud of me for not eating it or for only eating part of it. Just because we choose to eat differently does not require others to do so. As for you, though, "I'm proud of you!" You made wise choice.

Thanks JS and Whip for your comments. It is nice to have your perspectives of what's going on. I do feel good that I was strong enough to make the right choice and I am so focused right now that I know this time I will reach my goal by next year. He is taking me out Friday night to eat and I have gone online already to pick out exactly what I am going to eat on the menu.

Good girl! That is smart move. I have gone out to eat both prepared and unprepared and, trust me, I am happier with myself when I go prepared! It is so easy to be tempted as you look over the menu. Skip the menu and order what you know is good for you. Good luck!

Well after 3 days of him bringing home pizza(which is rare) and KFC on Friday. I realized that what I thought in the first place is true. But the good news is I am okay with this. I have been making my own meals and they are delicious. Tonight I am heating up the leftover KFC for them and I just made some well seasoned organic chicken and Asian stir fry vegetables steamed with Mrs. Dash and lemon juice. Delicious. I am stronger than my environment

Really sorry to hear that you don't have your husband's support in this. Be strong. As you succeed, maybe he will realize you are sticking to it and become more supportive. Either way, you are not alone. We are all in this together. I'm having to try to "pull myself back up" right now, too. I got away from my diet on vacation and am still trying to locate my motivation!!!
