Densible's Journal, 07 June 2008

Sometimes I read posts that affect me in nurturing ways (almost always) and then there are the posts that push my buttons! Too chicken to post a reply directly to the thread so posting it here in the form of a good old fashioned hormonal driven vent!

"Weight Loss is all about the burn. Burn more than you eat and the weight just falls off" uhmmm Hello?!

If only it was so simple! There is a not an insignificant subset of people (like myself) who find that weight loss is not a result of a simple ratio of output vs. input. I consistently burn far more calories than I eat and have struggled for years to lose weight. I blamed myself for my failure because the math never worked out (3500 cals = 1 lb of fat, yeah rrrrright...) and still doesn't! And it still makes me crazy!

I stopped counting the number of well meaning friends, family members (most of whom also struggle with weight) and doctors, (ESPECIALLY doctors) that have presented this equation to me as if it was the Holy Grail..like I hadn't tried burning more than I ate and failed over the course of months and months BEFORE reaching out to them for help....

There are metabolic imbalances, biochemical deficiencies, differential properties of proteins, carbs, fats, and sugars, developmental issues like age and other still unknown factors that influence weight gain and more importantly weight loss! I know how to gain weight-that's frightfully easy. Losing it? Well that's a bit of a mystery (not a secret) still and if you read around this site you will discover I am not alone. Thank goodness!

You have much more self restraint than I do. ;) It isn't as simple as calories in minus calories out, is it? If it were that simple, we'd all be sticks because I know how much we all exercise. The fact is that exercising has been shown to aid in health and "maintenance" of weight but not in loss. No study has been able to show a loss. Why? Because when you exercise you get hungry. But you know that. You just got me started on a rant. Shame on you. ;) Hormones play a huge role in this whole equasion and if those aren't balanced, then we cannot lose weight. Have you heard of the Schwartzbein Principle? One of the things she says is that you have to get healthy in order to lose weight, not lose weight to get healthy. I haven't read the book yet, but I'm going to order it. You might check out the website, though. Hang in there. You're doing great!

Sooo glad you are back and feeling better. I saw your journal entry re SP and will check it out..... Thanks to both you and MelodyTX for the support. After I wrote my rant I tried to edit it or remove it to no avail. I am glad now. It's only the truth.....

You are correct. There are other considerations and you know that I am with you on that... hypothyroidism for instance. Athlete's can eat anywehre from 5,000 to 7,000 calories a day just to MAINTAIN their bodies which are solid muscle and very lean.. muscle burns calories. Let's just say that calories in and calories out can be different for some people. I for one am not solid muscle and I probably make some bad choices in the other departments.. fat, carbs, etc.. like you mentioned. What you have said if great, it shows that there certainly are valid reasons why that statement isn't always correct for everyone. btw.. I loved what you said on my journal about feeding your dog your extra bites of cheese and its after effect. I'll bet the dog loves getting the cheese and doesn't mind the smell nearly as much as the other people around him. sooo funny!

Thanks so much for all the validation. O8WBG-Thanks for noticing! Since I stopped using my car to get to work I get more walking in plus the addition of a pedometer keeps me honest. I also work directly across the street from the gym which is down the street from my house AND I have a very crazy dog that has to be exercised every day or he will eat something/body. It's a perfect storm!
