Elixaveth's Journal, 14 May 2010

ok, so today is day 4 and back up 2 lbs, what the fuss? Day 1 246, day 2 248, day 3 246, day 4 248. I know I need to stop weighing every day but I'm too curious. Specialy since I went from 3 weeks of a no fat diet, high carb and NO salt. I did lose 10 lbs the 1st week, 2 lbs the 2nd week and 2 the 3rd week. I figured to lose 2 lbs per week I might as well do a diet I can enjoy. Atkins is sooo perfect for me. I'm Mexican so I can still make enchiladas for my family and have an "enchilada salad" you know? I just leave the torrilla out. Authentic enchiladas are WAY healthier than the restaurant versions.
Anyway, so Atkins is way easier for me and I have a trip to Mexico in a month. I spoke to one of my aunts last night, she is so excited that I'm coming and she'll finaly get to meet my hubby and 2 kids. Then my mom pulled out a picture of the last time I went to Mexico and DANG!!!
If I thought I had to lose weight then, it was probably like 15-20 lbs tops vs my 100-120 lbs that I need to lose now. My 8 yr old son Carlitos was like OMG Mom wow, I said -what, what do you see? he said -well look at the pic mom, you look so skinny cuz you don't have all the "fatness" you have now- he said it in the sweetest way. He is very aware of my overweight and we talk about it, food choices and stuff. I had a failed lap-band surgery, but that's a story for another day.
Anyway, I got so happy and even more motivated to go on that trip after hearing all the family together celebrating my aunt's bday. And then seeing that pic, wow that realy motivates me to lose as much as I can before I go and then I weigh this morning and gained almost 2 back. Why is this, I drink at least 100-150 oz of water per day. I'm not working out, what do I do? I have 4-5 weeks left before I leave!!!

I now this must be frustrating. Be patient. You just changed diets and it takes a little bit for our bodies to adjust. Keep with it, make sure you are recording everything - every taste, every bite, etc. You will see losses.

Thanks, I just need those loses to start like right now. I bought ketostix yesterday and at least they show I have "traces" of ketones in my urine. guess that's a start. This is day 4 only though so I need to be patient and just everything right. What about working out, I can't realy tell if we should or shouldn't during induction, everyone says something different.

If you aren't already active, I would wait. Your body is going through a lot of changes right now. If after 2 weeks you are feeling up to it, by all means start.

It took me about 3 or 4 days to star seeing any color on my keto stick. I didnt get to moderate for about 5 days or more and I have to practically eat no carbs to get to dark purple - which isn't good. I think working out isn't going to hurt anything. I would think it could only help. Once your body really switches into ketosis your weight should really start to drop. Good Luck!

I feel your pain, sweetie. I'm doing that same up and down thing. All I can say is, keep going. Some of us are just very metabolically resistant to weight loss. You already lost what, 14 pounds on the low fat diet? That's a shock to your body. I lost 16 pounds on atkins really fast, but now the up and down thing. That just means you and I have a huge advantage in times of famine. Our bodies conserve the fat so we can survive long spells without food. I know, I know...in this day and age we don't suffer famines in the US. But that's why you and I are here today. Our ancestors were the ones who had the ability to conserve fat for 'lean' times. We inherited that trait. Lucky us. lol You'll break through and do fine. :)

Elixaveth, give your body time to adjust to Atkins, and if you want some exercise, walk. Just 15 minutes a day is a good starting point, but as Keli said, don't start a full blown workout intil you give your bodytime to adjust. You are attempting to change your eating habots, and adding a full-blown work out may oeverwhelm you, and cause you to get frustrated and quit. I walk, that is the only kind of workout I get, besides the regular exercise I get from my daily chores. Good luck and don't give up. You can succeed with this way of eating. If you need anything, please do not hesitate to ask.

Elixaveth, I checked your diet calendar, and if you are recording everything you eat, I don't think you are getting enough calories. You need to keep your ratio of fat, protein, and carbs at about 60-70% fat, 20-25% protein, and 5-10% carbs. And you need 2 cups of green leafy vegetables, and 2-1/2 cup servings of other eggies a day. Eat butter, olive oil, and mayo to get your calories up without getting exra carbs. Do not use any low-fat products, and make sure that the condiments you use don't have an excessive amount of sugar. There is a great low sugar Ketchup made by Heinz, that you can use rather than regular, and if you can, try to avoid American cheese. You should only eat hard cheeses like cheddar, etc. I would also try to limit the Atkins shakes to 1 a day. Hope this helps a bit.
