Day 3 of a planned 5 day fast

Gained a pound :(

Possible reasons:

1) Water fluctuations - This could be affected by taking a lot of 'electrolyte concentrate' throughout the day. Not going to stop doing this because I like feeling good throughout the day :) Plus, 'water fluctuations' go both ways. Some days you gain, and some days you lose with a 'WHOOSH'

2) On Monday I had lost 12 pounds in 12 days - From my past history, there is a '4 pound a week speed limit'. What I then see (and I see now) is my body 'shrinks'. I can see that my stomach is getting smaller over the past few days.

3) Consuming a lot of Protein powder - "...Although you can extract four calories of energy from each gram of protein you eat, your body first uses this macronutrient for more pressing needs and turns to it as a fuel source only as a last resort..." https://bit.ly/2vcR3tR - - However, drinking "Quest Vanilla Milkshake Protein Powder" throughout the day is VERY satisfying.

Mostly I am not going to worry about it. If I go into another week long, or even month long 'plateau' so be it. I only plan to lose three more pounds anyway. The difference this will make in the happiness in my life is 'zero'.

What will make me happy is sticking to my diet. It is 'failing' to 'act' and 'behave' in the way I believe I should that causes me emotional 'suffering' and unhappiness. So, yesterday I planned out my diet, and I stuck to it. I didn't lose weight, but there will be no 'suffering'.
168.0 lb Lost so far: 39.0 lb.    Still to go: 4.0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

you will get there. sometimes the body holds on tighter when it feels starved. I know I was surprised when I raised my calories and dropped a pound, but before that I was losing measurement. having your protein is a good thing.

Nice. Sounds like you are succeeding with Rules 1 - 3 of my "Rules" post. That is my goal for today. One day at a time.

Weight shifts around all the time - day to day isn't really accurate. Over all you're losing that's what matters

@baskington - Haha yeah my body may feel 'starved' when I start a fast, but then eventually goes "Oh 'snap' we have fat right here to burn!". The 5 days fasts work well for me because day 3+ is where 'the rubber meets the road'. My body will always do whatever it takes to reach 'equilibrium', and if I don't take in enough calories and carbs it will eventually have to burn fat, and release the water.

@chesgreen - It was that post that was on my mind. I should have given you credit! Sorry! :)

@minitata - Agreed. When I do my analysis, I always do 'multiple day groupings. My 3 day is 1 pound lost, my 7 day is 4 pounds lost, My 14 day is 12 pounds lost - - Looking at it that way I should be alarmed if I lost weight any faster! :)

No worries...extra protein can get stored as glucose because the liver will change it over ang store it..gluceogenensis (Ok probably spelled that wrong) I learned this the hard way when I gained on a super high protein program a couple years ago

@HCB - Yeah I suspected that. I decided I am willing to 'take the hit' :) I did do a 45 minute weight lifting session this morning and felt GREAT (even though I am 'technically' 3 days 'fasted' right now - - but, with so much protein and fat (from the heavy whipping cream) in my system, my body may just consider it all 'normal food'). When I hit my BMI weight I plan to 'go back up' and work out seriously anyway.

I just took a glucose reading - 100mg/dL ! - - Yeah my protein drink is giving me a carb hit. Will take readings throughout the day...

Drank more protein drink, waited an hour, took a glucose reading - still 100mg/dL. Ok so it 'spikes' my blood sugar but 'food' would spike me up to 120-130mg/dL.

doesn't blood spike normally even with no food, the dawn effect in the morning does this. so I don't know how you can accurately tell which is a dawn type effect later in the day when you have not had anything and the body releases something from its stores, or you ingest something. way over my head.I don't know if the doctors truly know

@baskington - Yes, I am with you on that one. That's why I took my glucose monitor to work and just did a reading. I totally agree this 'could' be my insulin pulling glucose INTO my bloodstream from FAT through gluconeogenesis. And yes, we simply don't know. The fact that it is ONLY 100mg/dL makes me think that the protein powder is causing just a 10mg/dL spike over the normal 90mg/dL that my body would have from gluconeogenesis. I plan to wait another hour and take another reading WITHOUT having more protein powder this time.

I wouldn’t worry about the gain. I’m sure the electrolyte drink is just storing some of the water you are drinking. As far as the protein drank, it could be the added Splenda. Try it out with out it and see if it does the same

@CrashtestDawnie - I have to try the non-Splenda test tomorrow. I mixed the protein powder with the Splenda and put it in a single container to bring to work. If I spill it out on my desk and try to sift it to separate the protein powder from the Splenda (this is doable, when te container is shaken, the Splenda rises to the top (the "Brazil nut effect")). However, when someone passes by and sees me wit all te white powder on my desk, I probably wont have a job by the end of the day :)

Ha! that would be a trip. I thought you checked the Splenda before and it did not spike your blood. and honestly you don't know when your body will spike from a glucose from the blood the only time I know for sure is in the morning. the dawn effect which I am sure you test all the time.

now what I do know is when I do a heavy fat day and lower protein I do drop when I am in a stall. It is normal suggested to boost when you do keto.
01 Aug 18 by member: baskington
@baskington - Did another reading and now I am down to 90mg/dL. I think this is my normal level and that the protein powder just gave me a 2 hour 10mg/dL spike... (or it could be the Splenda... but I did test the Splenda as you reminded me).

LOL!! That’s funny! A 10mg spike is so small. Could that just be a fluctuation?

Five day fast. Unimaginable for me, but it sounds attractive to become a master at it. Pleased to see that you are mindful about muscle and electrolytes loss. See a lot of negative press about splenda etc, so I find it cool that you will give that a day off for a test.

@CrashtestDawnie - You're right, I bet I could just prick another finger and have it go up or down by 10mg.
