I went to the gym again today and I'm happy to report I ran a mile again. It felt so good to see the treadmill go "1.0"!!! It felt really good because I am famous for backsliding with eating and exercise - I may do really good for a few days and then I go to the gym and I only go half a mile or something. So two mile runs in a row felt great. I know people mean well, but having told people that I have reached a mile, I get all kinds of unsolicited advice about how to run more. I want to run more, I intend to run more, but I need to get there in my own way. I am going to be 40 years old and I have spent 0 of my life running. That's why it took me 7 months to run a mile. If I had tried to follow a "Couch to 5K" I would have given up after 2 weeks. I just have to do this my way, at my pace, using my methods (or lack of a formal method). That's the only way I do things. That's why I don't get a trainer. I have such bad psychological scars from being a kid and teenager in gym class that I literally cannot stand someone else telling me to do ANYTHING with my body, no matter how gently, politely or nicely. I just can't do it. I had horrible gym teachers, nasty and belittling peers, and horrible experiences. I know it's pretty dramatic to say I'm affected for life because of it but I can assure you I am and I know there are also a bunch of people out there that feel the same way.

I totally understand what you wrote! I was a fat kid and gym class always was a nightmare for me. I lost weight in junior high and did better in highschool - but up to that point - it sucked.

Good for you for getting that mile!! I am not a runner, I'm terrible with running, I give up really fast. You do it your way, it's obviously working, and you'll reach all of your goals eventually. Keep up the good work!!

Congrats! I am not telling you what to do, but I can tell you it gets easier after you reach that mile. I kind of did the same thing as you in my running, i hated to run as a kid and hated time trials in gym.
