Sandy701's Journal, 01 June 2012

Today was another elliptical day after my work at church. This is the third week I've gone from church to the gym and I can tell that machine is kicking my b*tt! Of course, I did an extra-long session today (2 sessions of 20 min. each plus a 5-minute cooldown after each), just to see how it would go. I survived, but think that I'll do LESS time the next time - LOL! I won't be going to the gym for at least a few weeks now because I'm done with my Friday church thing for awhile. Not saying I couldn't go any other time....just that it's more convenient if I can combine the two.

I closed out the month of May with 4 pounds lost, which I'm very proud of. That follows April (2 pounds lost), March (3), February (1), and January (gained 4). My average calories were 1330, so that's fairly close to my 1300 target......close enough for me. In April, I ran 1445 calories on a daily basis.

My TOTAL carb average for May was 38.6, not that much different from April's TC of 39.41. Where the difference really shows up is in the protein...89.32 versus 102.63 in April. I had been running protein averages slightly over 100 for most months. Even the Atkins book cautions that, while appropriate protein is essential, one CAN sometimes have too much. Instead of 6 oz. of steak as an example, I've cut back to 4 oz. or so. That is also a big help with keeping calories under control.

So, for June, I will keep on doing what I've been doing since the last week of April....keeping my carbs in line (BOTH total and net) but also targeting about 1300 in calories each day. This seems to be working for now, so I'll ride this as far as it will take me.

And finally....just a cautionary note to any person fairly new to Atkins who might happen upon this journal entry...do NOT follow what I am doing!!! I'm doing adjustments based on doing low-carb/Atkins for over TWO YEARS and am in a Pre-Maintenance phase. This is NOT a short cut to be used in Induction! OK....hopefully, 'nuf said! :)

Two years! Good for you. Also its great that you are still losing weight. I'm in induction and I consider losing 4 lbs a month a success. How much have you lost in total? (If you don't mind me asking) Keep up the good work! Sam

Sam, I've lost 86 pounds in 113 weeks....slightly more than 3/4-pound per week, although it has NOT come off in that nice linear fashion! Best of luck to you and thanks for stopping by!

Bren, you have done an excellent job trying to find the right mix of foods that will make your system happy. I can't even imagine how difficult that must be. Just being able to EAT and not gain weight is a triumph. Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks so much for the cautionary note at the end of your journal today. I am experimenting with an Atkins like meal plan so your explanation is helpful. I don't quite follow the numbers. To stay with a plan 2 years is exemplary! Keep up the great work! Kudos to you for being a model for so many !

Wow, you're incredible! I just checked out your weight history and you have been doing perfectly for the entire 2 years - it looks pretty linear to me! I started Atkins 2 years ago also, but after the first 6 months my progress has gone back and forth. It's good to know people really make it to Pre-Maintenance...but did you have to eat such low calories to lose weight?

Thanks Weiner4. I never would have thought I'd make it 2 years plus, but I guess it really has turned into a permanent change for me.

Hi there Ndubbs. During Induction (before I found FS), I was probably at 1500-1600 calories - maybe more because I was mistakenly snarfing down peanut butter! Once I began OWL, my averages changed to drop into the 1400-1500 range....not all that far off of the 1500-1800 range talked about in the Atkins book, and certainly above the 1200 level that's cautioned for us to not drop below. Also, this is only for weight LOSS....I've already found that I can handle more calories and maintain my weight. I'll detail more in tomorrow's journal....but remember that I'm not in my 20's or 30's anymore with all the activity of those ages!

Sandy, you have done an amazing job following the low carb lifestyle. You should be really proud of yourself. 83 pounds, a new and permanent lifestyle, and almost to goal weight! Have a great weekend!

Thanks Stef. This feels more "normal" and permanent with each passing month. I am beginning to wonder, however, exactly how I'll handle a vacation/class reunion (DH's)/seeing family and all the old familiar FOOD haunts later this summer! Could be quite the challenge!

Sandy, I have no doubt you will handle it just like you have handled everything else that has arisen...just fine! :)

Congratulations on another 4 pounds in May. Slow and steady wins the race! Thanks much for the tips - guess if we are going to eat meat like a caveman we'd better be out hunting wooly mammoths.
