Seriously?? The school district thinks head lice are acceptable, and inflicting them on others is acceptable as well? SMH! The dumbing down of this country continues.

THAT is awful - where I live kids are sent home if they have head lice.

unacceptable.. I would move if I could... especially if your spending that much on treatment and your poor kids... what about your lifestyle choice to not have head lice .. wtf... I would even notify the health dept or something..

Thank you all for the support. I did notify the health department, this has been passed through the state for the tri-state area. Pretty much nothing I can do about it. I considered moving but I just do not have the money to move several states away. Up until last year the kids were sent home if they had head lice. Which I appreciated because I really don't mind taking care of it once or twice and then taking them to the doctor to get cleared to go back to school. Thats my job as a mother. It just makes me so irate because I do not feel its my job to spend thousands of dollars a year treating my kids and my house because other people in the area think its ok to let run rampant.
So I will be looking into homeschooling I imagine because its the best I know to do. I'm not even gonna waste my money on the lice shampoo because its not even killing them anymore. Guess it will be hand-picking them for me.

May I ask, what state is this?

West Virginia. I live right on the border of west Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and all the schools in the tri state area are doing this craziness.

Last I knew, in my county, they quit even telling parents that the problem was in their child's classroom citing privacy issues....not fair to the other kids.
May I suggest the Cetaphil nontoxic method? Here is a link: http://nuvoforheadlice.com/test/?page_id=9#acceptLicense

$6,000, that's insane! Having a school full of kids that can't concentrate due to itchy scalps is ridiculous. Instead of spending so much on treatments I would stick with combing with olive oil and then smothering them with an olive oil/tea tree oil hair mask. Lice are getting immune to the chemical treatments but smothering them will always work if you persevere. Here's a link for what I used when my daughter got lice. http://www.healthline.com/health-slideshow/home-remedies-for-head-lice#1
Has anyone started a petition? I'm sure other parents are not happy about this.

That seems like an enormous amount of money anywhere but especially onerous in a state with one of the lowest median income rankings in the country. I'm so sorry for your struggles! And the poor teachers trying to educate rooms full of kids with bugs all over their heads!

Thank you everyone. I will definitely give the olive oil a try and hopefully it will take care of it. I know last year it ate up a huge chunk of savings we had set aside for other things. I'll definitely see about getting a petition against it to because it's not healthy for these children. They are afraid to leave the house. Which I don't blame them. We may actually have to end up moving off but I really don't know how to swing that. But I have faith it'll work out with a bit of diligence. Thanks again everyone!

I can't even begin to understand this. Here they send a note home if anyone comes to school with lice. They don't name the child but DO send a notice to be on the lookout. To me this is a health issue.

If you have to homeschool, I really love Sonlight and Math-U-See.

Walmart has a moose that actually kills lice and eggs. It comes in a box with a comb. The bottle is red. I forget the name of it. Its pricey but it worked for my kids. Took us almost a year to get lice free because they kept getting it from school, passing it to each other or i missed a bug or too. I also had to use it once. Once they were gone i bought the preventive shampoo also sold at walmart. Seems to work like the tea tree oil. Gah...my head is itching now. Good luck. And may thos bugs all go to h*ll!!
