puhpine's Journal, 16 February 2014

anyone cares to look at my food intake for this day (sunday) and comment on it, i plan to eat this every day.

what would be your advice for me?

- breakfast: coffee + 1 slice gingerbread + two small pieces of dried fruit (with sugar) + calcium pil + vitamin pil.

- lunch: 200 ml of non-fat dessert (only 200 kcals) + one piece of fruit (everyday something else)

- diner: one big salad with tomato, some saladdressing, one egg, some breadcrums, a little cheese (15 grams) and 15 grams of salted peanuts.

total cals: 1000.

i drink a lot of zero-calorie drinks, like water, light soda, tea, coffee. I work out everyday about an hour.

well... shoot!!! (please explain why you give the advice you give)

have a nice day,
Maud.

hi Maude- Good for you for taking control of your life and how you nourish your body. I have some concerns about your plans. First off, no matter HOW MUCH YOU LOVE the things that you have listed here, I can guarantee that it will get pretty boring after about...oh, two or three days. There is such an amazing variety of foods to nourish our bodies with... even as we try to lose weight.. and it is much more fun- and healthier- to add some variety. I suspect that eating the same thing every day is not a good way to get an over-all balanced diet, even if the day's menu seems balanced. Secondly, you need a minimum of 1200 calories or day or else your body will go into starvation mode and cling to every ounce of fat that you have. This is a hard one, I know ( I have to struggle when I am dieting to get up to 1400 or 1500 calories) but it is true that your body will crash on anything less than 1200 and you just won't lose the weight after your initial water weight loss. Congratulations on working out for an hour every day! That is great. Be sure to let your body rest every once in a while. A rest day in there allows for muscle fibers to repair. Also, try to shake up your work outs: don't do the same thing every day. Keep your body guessing! Clean eating ( no sodas, even diet ones) and variety in food and exercise and moderation will get you where you want to be, I promise. I hope that this doesn't sound preachy. I am an expert at dieting... and I gain it all back, every time. I am trying, this time, to make it a healthy lifestyle choice that I can keep for the next 30 years or so. Peace and love-

thank you a lot for your comment. I mean to vary a lot, just base it on this menu. you say 1000 kcals is not enough, and i agree on that, but i forgot to mention i have one off-day a week, where i eat 2000+ cals to even it out... for parties and holidays and stuff. We all know what life throws at us ;)

Since you asked, your vitamin pill will not make up for your lack of protein and fresh vegetables (one salad doesn't cut it). And where are your Omega 3's?

you say you have a one-off day a week but let me tell you girl, one day at 2000+ als per week won't make up for all the cals you need per day for your body to function properly. you need to calculate your BMR, which is the number of calories you need in ONE day just to SURVIVE (you BMR corresponds to the number of calories you'd need if you'd lay down in bed all day). it most likely is over 1000. i have never heard of anyone whose BMR is Under 1000. then you'll need to know your BMI, which changes according to your age, weight, height, activity level etc. calories are not to be counted over a week, but per day. a "cheat day" is a great ideabut you need to eat more every day. you body never stops living. you will still lose weight with more than 1000 calories a day and a cheat day. more détails about how to calculate all of this here : http://health-gasm.com/calculators . please think about it. hope that helps. love x

At your current weight, you could eat more calories than that per day and still lose. A diet needs to be sustainable (with out too much deprivation) so you can keep doing it for the long haul. Fruits and vegetables never made anyone fat, so make sure you are getting enough. Protein is so important to your diet. Make sure you get protein at each meal. With out enough protein, you will lose muscle as you lose weight. The more muscle you have the more calories your burn at rest, the more easy it becomes to lose weight and the easier maintaining becomes (hence why men lose faster). So you don't want to lose muscle. Losing weight is a learning experience. Some people can do a cheat day and get right back on and lose. Some people can't. Find out what works for you and change as needed. Good luck!
