DairyKing's Journal, 08 January 2014

Thank you to all my FS Friends for your encouragement. When I got home, I didn't have any yogurt in the house, but I did have this bottle of probiotics that I had gotten from Walmart that is supposed to have a kazillion active cultures in it, so I started taking it. DW is supposed to pick me up some yogurt today on her way back from the doctor. I can tell I'm getting better; I've actually slept through the night these last 2 nights for the first time in 3 weeks. I love store-bought yogurt - especially the fruity foo-foo ones. I tried the plain Greek yogurt - YUK! I'm not sure I could do the homemade yogurt thing. Don't let the "DairyKing" moniker fool you: the only dairy products I'm a big fan of is ice cream and cheese, so store-bought yogurt is probably my best option, along with the probiotics.
Yesterday, it was -8F when I came to work, and this morning it was +8F. What a difference 16 degrees makes - a regular heat wave! Supposed to get up into the 30's by this weekend. Even the well traveled roads around here are still snow-packed and icy. They're not even bothering to put anything on them. It's going to be a slushy mess when this stuff starts to melt, but it sure beats busted water pipes.
Since my health is beginning to take an upturn, and my strength and endurance is rising, I'm also getting this yearning to exercise more discipline in my eating habits, and starting to think about getting back into an exercise routine. When I felt so bad and useless, it was so easy to have a little chocolate here, a little egg nog there, tortilla chips and cheese, and, well, you all know too well where that road leads. Some of us have been on this cycle for so long, our biggest obstacle is the "what's the use" syndrome. Once you determine that the past is past, and there's nothing you can do about that, but you can do something about your future, then the hard part is over. It's determining to take that first step that's always the hardest for me. Sometimes I just have to get to the point of desperation before I declare, "Enought is enough," and get back on track. Well, enough is enough, this is the year that I'm going to make it happen. There are too many motorcyle rides that I haven't taken yet, and too many things to do that are just too damn difficult to do if you're pulling an oxygen bottle behind you (no, I'm not on oxygen, and don't want to be). Anyway, that's my rhetorical contribution for the day. Toodles!

Very, very glad you are feeling better. The probiotics should work as well as the yogurt - especially since it is already bought and paid for.

Hey DK - so glad to hear you are doing better. You are so right about the "what's the use" syndrome. That happens to me...but I get back up and keep moving and trying to choose well. We are with you!

Yeah... You sound much more positive and better... Don't go too mad on the exercise... Your body is going to need energy to get itself back to normal, so you don't want to deplete it... Small steps DK :-)

Glad you are feeling better. Your words about being unable to change the past and just focusing on the future hit home for me. That's where I am too. As for the greek yogurt - don't eat the plain stuff! Yuck! We use the plain greek yogurt in place of sour cream on tacos and things like that, but never have eaten it plain. I've had several kinds of greek yogurt and there are only a couple that actually taste good. If you want to give it one more try - go for the Chobani brand with fruit in them. I love strawberry and pineapple the most, but they are all very good.

I mix the plain Greek yogurt with some blueberries and a scoop of vanilla protein powder. Mix that up... and add a few chopped walnuts. Not too shabby and it will help you build back up too. Start walking a bit at first. So happy you feel better. This is the year we all get back in shape. One day at a time. Hugs!

I used to have low fat Greek yoghurt, protein powder and a banana or mixed frozen berries, when I came back from strength training at the gym... Yummy
