SlimChick's Journal, 12 October 2010

Well I'm still not totally weaned of "junk" food. I think if I cut the junk food and ate more veggies I'd do better. I'm down to a 6/8 in jeans I think (as opposed to 10/12) and people have commented I look thinner. Still haven't bought that tape measure! I need to get one.

On the "plus" side (or should that be minus?) I have maintained a lower plateau at 151. I used to get stuck at 155, and then 153. So as long as I'm steadily lowering that plateau, I'm not doing *that* bad.

But seriously, the calorie approach to weight loss is NOT perfect. I'm quite certain I'm not the only person who diligently keeps calories at a 1150/1250 average and still has trouble. :) It's not that I'm bad at counting calories (I'm a physicist, darn it, I understand measurements) -- it's that some of us have unique metabolic systems. Just like the flies in a recent experiment, some of which gained weight on fat, some of which gained NO weight on high fat, some of which gained on carbs AND fat, some of which only gained weight on carbs, some of which never gained weight period, and so on. Our bodies are not perfect carbon copy machines; we all burn at different rates and some of us process one fuel more efficiently than another (some of us are trucks, some of us are yougo's, ha). Genetics and what tribe(s) we came from (foraging, hunter/gathering, agricultural, etc) long ago on the evolutionary tree probably has a much bigger impact on how we process foods than we realize.
