Merrily we roll along...I've been singing this over and over in my head, 'cause if I sing it long enough I might believe it! Emotions and teeth are relatively the same today as they have been most of the week. Yesterday's moment of Zen did indeed pass, and I've been Queen of the Grumpypants all evening (poor Hill, he's had to deal with me). I really need to get over my too-chicken-to-go-to-the-dentist mode, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. I haven't been eating the way I should 'cause I'm afraid that everything will cause pain, so I've pretty much been starving myself, well, nutritionally starving myself (one can only eat so many scrambled eggs before one begins clucking), and I think it's creating a lot of this mood. I am soooo affected by food, and even though I'm letting Hill think I'm cranky because of him *grin* *wink*, if I'm honest it's because I'm not well-hydrated (lukewarm water tastes poopy), and because I haven't had a decent raw vegetable in days (Dear Lord, I really have moved to dark side, I mean light side--I'm feeling DEPRIVED of vegetables!?) Going to try Evelyn's suggestion of saltwater gargle for a couple of days, and I'm rockin' the Advil Liquigels, but if this doesn't subside then, yes, I will face THE CHAIR (can you hear the screams of terror?). Anxiety over THE CHAIR is making me want to eat some nice, soft, homemade (real--fakey sugar stuff) chocolate pudding. But I will resist--and pray that Captain Advil and the Saltwater Avenger will work their magic so that I may return to the Land of Roughage soon. BRRGAWHK! (<-- Chicken squawk)

OI! Honey, the chair will save you more pain in the end... please do not hesitate and get an appointment asap! I've seen many ppl with high fear, and it won't help a bit to wait, and I don't mean to scare you, but it really could make it much worse to wait. Salt water rinses will not heal or help in the long run. Please, save yourself what could hurt more and cost more in the long run. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. I've been a hygienist for about 9 yrs. I'm not a dentist, but I've been in the field for over 10 yrs, total and waiting is never a good thing. They can offer you valium if you have a driver, too. :) It'll be okay!! :)

Thanks, Bully--I'm trying to suck it up and be brave. Looking into cost right now, my teeth are such a wreck they won't want to stop with what just needs fixing immediately. And believe me--I will have a driver!

I am a baby when it comes to the dentist too, but it is a necessary evil. Be brave, little chicky, and make the call. You might ask around if anybody knows an extra gentle dentist. I once had a really great dentist. It makes all the difference in the world. :)

Yes, find a dentist that specializes in chickens (have you heard the expression "like pulling hen's teeth"?) I mean scaredy-chickens! I once went to a dentist that used some kind of gas mask thingy, which was really kind of fun. I breathed so deep I was in lala land! I wanted to go back again just so I could use the gas mask! Don't let your fear win. I hope you feel better soon!!!

I've spent a lot of hours in the dental chairs....see my hygenist every 90 days trying to stave off perio disease...doing good so far! Darlin', you need to ask around and find a gentle dentist...and believe me when I say....they are out there in abundance....he/she will make you very comfortable....the worst part of the dental chair is the noises....and noise doesn't hurt....but makes you *anticipate* the pain....It doesn't come tho....Wear some headphones and crank some good AC/DC....you won't hear nothin' but Angus!! Come on....get to it....pick up that phone....hugggies

You're too funny! Thanks for the laugh today. I needed one : ) Everyone covered my advice about the dentist so no need to repeat their wise words. I do think that fear of the dentist is sort of a self-perpetuating cycle, though. You don't go until something hurts so badly that you can't stand it so you are already in bad shape when you get there and the experience is not fun because it usually means something invasive at this point. Maybe after this, try going for more preventative visits by getting regular cleanings and check ups. That way things won't get out of hand and you'll be able to avoid the nasty visits. But definitely ask for the gas mask! And don't be like Bill Clinton... inhale!!! Inhale!!! Hehehe.

I add my Mommy dearest opinions to everyone elses on the dentist front....but on the food front- room temp soups- veggies pureed and whipped- I have boiled chicken and made it with chicken salad additions and blended to a spread that's delicious....

*sitting in a corner pouting, and gnashing my point, slightly less painful teeth* I know, y'all are right. I'll get on the dentist thing...Thanks for the AC/DC suggestion. I think I'll put "Hell's Bells" on a loop 'cause that's what I'll be thinking. And definitely going for the gas--and I'll inhale so hard that mask gets sucked right up my nose! Reluctant, grudging thanks for your encouragement and wisdom, Oh my Captains...

I feel the same as you do about dentists and have been putting off a much needed visit for quite some time. Guess I better go too :( (maybe one of these days)

Sorry to sound like Happy Gilmore but what you must do "in the chair," Babe -- is GO TO A HAPPY PLACE! During my last visit to the dentist, I listened to the soft rock on the dentist's favorite station, envisioned my favorite students lip-synching on episodes of American Idol, and virtually left the place of "slight discomfort." Why did I not envision members of my family lis synching? Because these family members are too close to my heart and the emotions I felt left me nervous and afraid. You're a tough nut to crack. You'll be fine.

hey! have ya actually ever SAT in a dentist's chair?? It's no pain at all!!! (Don't worry, DENTISTS-OF-THE-WORLD-UNITED is not paying me to say this!). But seriously, the hype is worse than the reality..! Just DO IT!!!! GET IT DONE with!!! You're only making it worse!!!! Seriously!

I have been in the dentist's chair several times (and it wasn't always as bad as I make it out to be). My fear is deep-seated--when I was 6 I had a dentist who was MEAN. I had to have a cavity filled, and I was scared, he wouldn't let my mom come in, and I remember that I was whimpering a little bit, but not throwing a fit, and he told me that if I wasn't quiet he was going to go to the basement and get a shot with a needle that was as long as my arm to shut me up. It terrified me. I know that he was just a mean man, that not all dentists are like that, but I've still been terrified ever since--even having my teeth cleaned sends me into a panic. This is one of those issues where I just have to face my fear, but I'm not really excited about it. I'll do it though--*sigh*.

Oh! so sorry to hear about that event. What a HORRIBLE guy!!!! Well, that IS a serious concern, then. I hope you find the strength and courage to work out this problem, bit by bit. Baby steps. You can do it!!!!!!!

OMG! That's a TERRIBLE thing that happened to you. Shame on that man! Some adults just don't realize how they can influence children and that influence lasts the rest of their lives! Hang in there. You can do this!
