Today was a pretty high calorie day. Started with a big egg extravaganza went to an apple fritter (ate half of a big one) and ended with this brisket and an Old Fashioned for dessert! Still under my calorie goals and feeling fully indulged.

Thank you for posting this. It is proof positive that managing fuel [food] intake in a reasonable manner is the key to a happy, healthy life without starving yourself or going without one of the great pleasures of tasting and eating delicious food, no matter what the nutritional content as long as you are aware of what you are eating and plan for those special times. That is what makes us fat-storage-proned people successful at weight loss and weight maintenance. We might have to work a bit harder than the nature-blessed "skinny, metabolism blessed" person to be in the healthy weight zone but who cares? It is the end result that matters.

What kind of wood do you use to smoke your brisket?

Catzz2–just because a person is “skinny” does not make them healthy. In the long haul, if you eat shit quality food more than likely you will ultimately have shit quality health. Weight is just one component of health. HEALTHIER at any weight is a goal to work toward for all of us.

Curious Kenna, have you read about Mark Haub you lost 27 pounds on a vending machine diet while improving his measurable health parameters? He supplemented with vitamins and still tried to get his protein in with a daily shake. I don't know why some less nutritious food would make one unhealthy as long as vitamins, fiber, and protein were on point.

And of course, that was an extreme example, I'm not advising people should be on a vending machine diet but daily treats aren't going to harm you. It's when your entire diet revolves around them and you fail to get in proper nutrition for an extended period of time where problems may arise.

Oh Diablo— there is so much more to be considered in what helps to create long term health. We can “get by” with a lot when we are younger, but eventually it catches up to most people. Look at the folks here on FS . Most didn’t start out in their younger years with diabetes, heart problems, hypertension — the problems are cumulative over time. The damage slowly creeps up until it can no longer be ignored . It’s sad but true.

Yes that’s are important. We have wonderful foods available to us— like pizza. That’s why I am such a believer in healthier foods most of the time and and indulgences once in a while in moderation. I do understand that there are people who just can’t do that. Science is trying to help these folks, but we are not there yet.

My diet leaves typically a 700 calorie deficit, even when I have a treat. I eat a lot of veggies and very few carbs 5 days a week. Brisket is highly fatty and not the good kind, but delicious. Worth doing once a month. I had pizza and beer tonight as a nice break from my norm. Already thinking about my 1000 calorie workout tomorrow. It’s going to be epic!
