Sandy701's Journal, 17 July 2012

3.1 miles walked, doggies just 1.2 due to the heat. UGH another 10; 92 degrees when I finished up...BEFORE 10AM!!

More household stuff today.

I'm reducing my morning eggs down to 2 since the 3 seems like a lot now that I've added tomatoes into my scramble. Eggs are such a good all-'round food that I hate to take one out, but the numbers just work out better this way. We'll see how it goes.....there will be a number of adjustments as of 8/1 for true Maintenance. I feel a bit like I'm back in the early stages of this WOE, trying to balance out all the parameters.

While I'll still have a strong focus on this WOE going forward, I'm very much looking forward to gaining other parts of my life back. So very much of my life these past 2+ years has been spent on reading and researching, planning, cooking, adjusting menus to hit certain targets, finding "new" clothes that fit, etc. This is not to complain about anything, just to illustrate that committing to losing weight has required some substantial changes in my daily to-do list!

I absolutely believe that had I not been able to make the time for this commitment, I would not have been successful. Even as I type this, I mentally remind myself that success is not defined by reaching my goal weight, but by keeping that weight off. I continue to read journal entries from people who have a million things going on in their lives, a boatload of stresses, and they're "hoping" to diet and lose weight in the midst of it. I wish them the best, I truly do. But I wonder if it is realistic. To me, it's like the fallacy of "women can have it all." (Or, men, for that matter.)

Like a previous journal entry, there's only 100% of us.....not 150%. For me, to really focus on my weight loss and change my WOE going forward, it had to be a major part of my everyday life...other activities had to be set aside and priorities had to change. For most of this journey so far, my WOE was a DAILY ISSUE that required my thoughts and focus and attention and action. I'm optimistic that will subside, to some degree, in Maintenance, but my WOE can never again be something that I can totally ignore each day. That daily attention is what's required to keep me at the weight I want to be.

If I ever forget that point, that will be when the weight will begin to come back.

I agree, I think keeping it off long term is the hard part. Old habits have a way of sneaking back little by little. But arming ourselves continually with knowledge & keeping track of what we eat & do is the ticket for continued success. I don't know about you, but sooooo many times I have lost weight, only to gain it back & usually then some....gosh, do I hate how I felt when that happened & as it was happening I felt so powerless to stop it. But, then I had been on a diet, not a WOE...BIG difference! So, I am right with you...daily attention is required! I am very OK with that, for the rest of my life!

You have been & continue to be a student of nutrition. I admire that about you. I notice that you mention eggs in your journal today. I am a big fan of eggs as a healthy food and today my doctor handed me a food suggestion list for lowering cholesteral. If - when - I follow this plan I will limit my eggs to 4 egg yolks per week. But I can have plenty of egg whites. Egg substitute too!

GG, I too would diet - to some degree - only to gain back the lost weight and then some. If I really look at it closely, the gains would come when I'd go through semi-stressful events, like changing jobs, moving, etc. And, of course, the diets were just intended as measures to drop the weight so I could go back to eating as I had before! This time IS different. For one thing, I've never "dieted" for over 2 years straight!!! And, I will have to be extra alert to what I'm eating during those stressful times, as I know I'm still prone to going off the deep end! But, this sure feels like a permanent change this time.

W4....Ah, cholesterol.....my newest thing to learn about! Just ordered 2 recommended books and printed up both pro and con reviews. Nothing like some SERIOUS nightime reading!

Wow cholesterol books, that sounds like some interesting nightime reading. What does the acroynm WOE stand for ? I see it in several journals. Good luck on nighttime reading !

I believe it is a "Way of eating."

You struck a nerve about "having a million things going on" but in my old age I have discovered that we have to take time to take care of ourselves - and that includes making sure we are eating well. Trust me when I say, if we don't do it no one else will!

Notfast, Sol808 has it right. The acronym is used so that one doesn't have to use the term "diet," which implies only a short-term change in what one eats. WOE has a long-term focus. You'll even see some journals/posts refer to it as a WOE/WOL....meaning way of eating/way of life....again, a reference to the broader changes when one makes substantive changes in the types of foods one eats.

Buffy, I agree with you. No one else is going to pay the medical bills (or home health bills) I could incur if I develop any of the various ailments of lugging around too much weight!
