Woke up this morning feeling like someone beat me up and then inflated me with gas. Ughhhhh.

I suspect it was the smoked paprika I put on the kale chips I made on Sunday, and ate both yesterday and Sunday. Paprika comes from peppers which are nightshades. I had read that people who are sensitive to nightshades often have trouble with paprika, but I was playing ostrich about that. Not me. Nope. I'm okay.

Not. Damn those kale chips tasted great with that paprika.

Oh well. Time to learn a bit more about this whole syndrome of nightshade sensitivity. Nothing is worth feeling this crappy. The other possible suspect is my vegan protein shake. It has quinoa powder in it, and I had quinoa on Sunday with my chicken curry. I think I need to stop using that powder for a few weeks, and then try it again, and of course eliminate the quinoa for a few weeks as well.

Eating is feeling like walking a field of land mines. You never know what is going to trigger a reaction. But, once I identify these problem foods, I am hopeful that eliminating them will further aid my weight loss. Plus, I will just feel better. Worth the struggle.

Came up with a recipe for a faux chocolate mousse today that came out really well. I had seen a recipe on-line that was a paleo cupcake. I was skeptical and read the recipe. The frosting was an avocado with sweetener, and cocoa powder. Hmmm. No eggs, no dairy, and no sugar.

Got me thinking today, and so I decided to go for a variation of that....more like a mousse. I had a VERY ripe avocado sitting in the fridge so that was the start. I mixed it up with 3 tbsp of cocoa powder, 2 tbsp of coconut cream, 1 tbsp of ghee, and 1 tbsp of truvia. (This is the only sweetener I will use.) Blended it all together with my stick blender because I was too lazy to get out a big old blender, and then have to clean all the parts. Worked just fine. And it was yummy. Tasted the avocado just a bit. But it seemed as the mousse sat for a little bit, the cocoa dominated. Ate half at lunch and put the rest away for another day. Nice to have the occasional treat that won't mess with my blood sugar or my gut.

Got my workout in this afternoon. I was tempted to postpone it till tomorrow, but then it just hangs in my head, nagging at me, making me feel guilty. Glad I did it and felt good afterwards.

Found out that bell peppers are a problem as well for me. I had long suspected nightshade vegetables were not my best friend, but didn't want to confirm that. But, once I decided to do the elimination diet, it made sense to check them out as well. Added some bell peppers to the curry I made the other night, and then had some as leftovers for lunch yesterday. Bad joint pain last night with no other explanation. The tomatoes are even tougher to go without. I plan to try out tomato paste in a few weeks. Read about someone who could tolerate that. Finger's crossed.

Otherwise feeling good. Workout this morning worked out some of the achiness, although the hour plus drive this AM and at noon hit my leg hard...almost like the pre-elimination days.

A few years ago, I would have been shocked that I could live without all the foods I do; sugar and sweeteners, gluten, dairy, eggs, peanuts, soy, tomatoes, bell peppers, peanuts. But, what I didn't know then is how much better I feel when I don't eat these foods. And how dramatically improved my general health has been. I have not gotten sick with a cold in more than 2 years. I used to not go more than 2 or 3 months without getting sick, and it would take me 2 to 3 weeks to get better again. All my markers from bloodwork are much, much better; HDL, triglycerides, blood sugar, CRP (measure of inflammation). You name it, it's better. That for me, is incredibly motivating to stick with it. That and the greater ease in my day.
Thank goodness I am a good cook, and we live in a day and time when substitutes like coconut milk are readily available. Twenty years ago, this would have been much tougher.

Been a LONG time since I journaled, or did anything more than read the emails of people's journal entries, on this site. It has been an interesting year. As in one of those Chinese curses; "may you lead an interesting life". My daughter has had some serious health issues requiring lots of caretaking. And it was her senior year of high school. She graduated, but is taking this year off to continue her journey to better health.
I managed to gain 30 pounds over that time period, and got up to 295. Turns out stress can make you gain weight like nobody's business. I was not a saint, but I also did not go crazy. An occasional indulgence, like a piece of cake, or a candy bar that was not higher than 85% cocoa. I am also extremely sensitive to carbs.
About two months ago I got religion again, and started up with JJ Virgin's diet. Borrowed the book from the library, and liked what I read about weight loss resistance, particularly in women over a certain age. It was worth a try. I had already eliminated corn, sugar, gluten, and ate very little soy, so I had to eliminate eggs, dairy, and peanuts. I was stunned to experience a dramatic reduction in pain in my IT band. I had been severely handicapped over the previous 9 months by increasing pain in my right leg, particularly along the outside of my thigh, but also shooting down my leg, and effecting my calf muscles as well. It just started to disappear. My skin had already improved quite a bit with previous changes, but I was shocked to see and feel it get even better. Who knew?
In addition to the 7 foods she suggests you eliminate, I also took out the nightshade veggies; tomatoes and peppers specifically.
When I began reintroducing the foods, eggs were connected to the pain in my leg, dairy gave me terrible gas and bloating, and tomatoes gave me severe stomach pains and the runs. Needless to say, I won't be eating any of those things any time soon.
I miss my butter coffee in the morning, but I now have a protein shake (vegan, not whey), loaded with all sorts of nutrious stuff. Not the yummiest thing in the world, but I feel good after drinking it, and it sustains me all morning. I sometimes add some ghee that I made from grass fed butter. It makes it creamier, and longer lasting.
Lunch is usually a salad with leftover protein from dinner and some nuts. Dinner is usually meat or fish, veggies, and some sort of high fiber starch such as quinoa or sweet potatoes. And I can have chocolate still. How can I complain! Actually I feel like I am eating very well. I am satisfied, and feel good.
I started an exercise program four weeks ago; Metabolic Aftershock. I learned about it on Sean Croxton's Underground Wellness podcast. I like the principles, and again, he (Jade Tada) is focused on people with weight loss resistance. And it takes about 40 minutes, three times a week. 15 minutes is super intense, but then it is done for another day or two. I can feel stronger, and have lost 8 inches since I started it. And I have lost 12 pounds since I started with JJ Virgin's plan. Feel like I am on the right path for me.
Long post, but lots to catch up on.
