Twenty years ago, my hometown was the diabetes capital of the world. Large segments of the population lived off of beans, rice, corn, and pan dulce. When we wanted treats, everyone headed for leche de dulce or cervesa. Have you ever been to a Tejano birthday party? The whole family shows, all two hundred and fifty of them...

"It's the little one's first birthday! We need to rent a bouncy house, buy enough bbq meat to feed an army, and should we get cases or kegs of beer?"

A friend of mine invited Anglos to her baby shower. It was a normal baby shower until the last Anglo left. Then her father-in-law started pulling cases out of the back room and the real party began. I love how we turn everything into a party, but it makes people fat.

Now, the rest of the world has caught up, and we have The Incredible Obesity Crisis worldwide. The US isn't even in the top ten fattest countries. You have to go to the Southern Hemisphere for that. Sad. My town has more obese people than it did twenty years ago, but it lost its title of "Fat City" when other US cities exceeded it. Some doctors are finally recognizing what led to this expansion, and are trying to do something about it. That's why at last, I am losing instead of gaining, but sometimes I do miss sopapillas or some good old fashioned enchiladas like Mom used to make!

"All Calories Are Not Created Equal."

OK, I just upset someone's religion. I used to say this, but I am a realist, and one who hunts for the truth no matter where it is. I may dig in on this or that point, but when contradictory facts come to light, I am not afraid of doing a 180. This is true scientific method, because science in NEVER "settled" until politicians and other religious nuts get involved.

Dr. Eric Westman said, "Calories count, but you do not have to count them." Why? Because when you eat nutritious food and stay away from sugar, your body actually tells you when to stop eating. If you need more nutrition one day, you will eat more. If you need less, you will eat less. No one counted calories until the middle of the 20th century, and guess what? Most people were at a perfectly normal weight. What went wrong? That's a story for a book. Maybe next year, I'll write that one.
