I have had a crazy, stressful weekend. On a hike Saturday morning, my dog was bitten by a rattlesnake. Sweet puppy was able to walk back down the mountain and we got to the emergency vet, where they were able to fix him up, but not before his head swelled to the size of a mastiff. He was back home in a few hours, but he is still not fully back to himself. I am happy he is on the mend.

Throughout this roller coaster ride (and with the added background stress of my son being out of town on his school band trip this weekend), I managed to keep my eating somewhat on track. Perhaps this was helped by the fact that I found that all of my cute summer clothes that fit so nicely last summer are now uncomfortably snug. I am acutely aware that I have to do something about this situation.

So, I planned meals for the week. I have made the grocery list. I will log my food. I will exercise. I just need to buckle down and do it, not for one day or two, but each and everyday.

We were treated to lunch today at a Chinese restaurant by a family who had recently moved to the US from China. My hubby was integral to helping with the employment portion of their move, as well as helping them with the social adjustments in moving to a new country. We had a very nice lunch, but, between ordering our favorites and his ordering dishes from home (in Chinese, which the waiter but none of us understood), we ended up with WAY too much food. The dishes just kept coming and coming. I enjoyed my lunch and was not tempted to eat the last little bit of this or that to finish up the dishes because it soon became apparent there was absolutely no way we were going to eat everything. When I felt I had eaten enough, I stopped. The hard part was continuing to stop. I am happy to say I resisted to urge to eat a little more of this or that, despite the fact that turning of the lazy susan on the table kept presenting such a variety of good things to eat.

I was able to go running this morning before we headed out to lunch. I didn't go too far or long, but I felt really good. I can breathe and run without having to concentrate too hard on it. I seem to have found a pretty good (albeit slow) rhythm that allows me to run for longer and longer without having to stop and walk. I'd still rather be hiking...

I have been having a good week so far! I had forgotten how much better I feel when I eat healthy foods! I have probably written that same sentiment half a dozen times if I went back through my journal. I wish I knew how to keep that thought in my brain for good and not have to backslide and feel sluggish and blah before I come back around to it! Maybe I need to hang a big sign in the kitchen...

I did manage to get a hike in with a friend this morning. It was finally a little cooler here today and we had a delightful tromp through the mountains. This trail begins with a steep, unrelenting climb up to the top of the hill and then meanders around and down with little ups here and there. I was determined not to whine about that climb, and I managed to get up today without a complaint. :)

I skipped lunch out with the MIL, sending my hubby out to enjoy his mother's company while I puttered around the house. My son had a band concert last night at school and had somehow split his pants open! Poor kid had to go up on stage with a big hole in his pants. Luckily, his saxophone covered his little problem. So, I put his pants back together today. I also cooked up some shredded beef for the Cinco de Mayo dinner we are hosting after my daughter's orchestra concern this evening. This will be our third night running of sitting for hours at the middle school, watching the kids perform. I love seeing them, but it has required a lot of planning on my part to get meals prepared early so we are all not starving when we get home afterwards.

My daughter has been having headaches and one thing the doctor suggested was that she might be getting a headache after a sugar buzz. She and I went through and figured out what she eats on a typical day and found that she does eat a tremendous amount of sugar. She is healthy and active otherwise, but I want to make sure she is getting good eating habits now so she doesn't have to struggle with this later on in life. (I also want my non-headachy daughter back!) We talked about some alternatives she could have for breakfast and what we could pack in her lunch that would be healthy and that she would actually eat. It will be a process, but I feel good about started her on a path that will keep her feeling good.

I have to go sweep my floors. One of the friends coming over tonight is allergic to dogs and my Bosco has been shedding up a storm lately!

Have a great Friday!
